I feel like her message is that she had to go through all these other zones (Cheek To Cheek, Joanne, A Star Is Born) for self-fulfillment in order to be ready to go back to the fun-loving sound that she started out with. ARTPOP really was a crash for her mentally and of course on a career level, so for her to get back to her musical roots, and in order to really come full circle, she had to challenge herself and her talent in new ways.
