While I think the song is a bop, in its demo form, I do think would benefit from a cleaning up in production and lyrical content. The first verse is simple and affective, but we've heard her tell this story several times; That she lived in NY, no one believed in her, except herself and look at her now! This doesn't feel as smart or as purposeful as Black Jesus for example. The chorus has a nice melody, but there's a lot of words. From a feminist standpoint, I think she doesn't need to tell us she doesn't need a man to be a free woman. The second verse is a bit clunky, she doesn't need a man but she wants to be kissed. Obviously, you don't NEED something, you can WANT it though, but I think revolving the concept of freedom around a man can be slightly problematic. And for the rest of the song, its chorus and bridges with the same lyrics; if the rumour is true that all the songs hit the 3 minute mark, I can see a lot of this being cut. I'm being critical; its a demo, but I like the song. Is it her most polished track? No? Is it her deepest? also, no? Will I bop to it in a club? What do you think?
