Yeah, classic songs are really greater than the sum of their parts. Nostalgia is also so manipulative. I always feel like I’m in the minority when I say that Gaga’s music has absolutely gotten better with each release. It really shouldn’t be a controversial statement, because I know for a fact that if The Fame Monster came out after ARTPOP it would be considered a disappointment. Expectations on Gaga have gotten so unreasonable that it simply isn’t possible for any single to live up to what people want. They want an earworm, but Stupid Love was missing something. They want a raw banger, but Perfect Illusion was missing something. They want something that’s weird and experimental, but Applause was missing something. They want an inspiring statement but BTW was missing something. Bad Romance is not better than those leads but time and legacy shaped it to what it is. It's not because she has different influences (basically all her albums have very different vibes and influences) that she stopped being Gaga. This time it's dance / house from the 90s.
