Belgians urged to eat frites twice a week

Unless Belgians have the appetite to tackle the problem, the chips are down for 750,000 tonnes of spuds

Belgium’s farmers have exhorted their countrymen to step up to the plate and eat frites twice a week to demolish a 750,000 tonne potato surplus that has built up because of coronavirus. 

Frites, a kind of chip that is fried twice, are a national dish in Belgium, where they are regularly paired with mayonnaise and mussels. But potato farmers are hard hit by the country’s lockdown measures, which were imposed in mid-March and closed restaurants.

“Let us all eat French fries twice instead of once a week," Romain Cools, secretary general of Belgapom, the trade association for potato growers, said. 

Even though the country’s iconic frites shacks were given special dispensation to stay open, many shut because of the pandemic. Those that stayed open have seen customer levels drop....

I'd have no problem with eating potatoes twice a week but why fries specifically?  It's too greasy. Maybe baked potatoes and mashed potatoes too? Either way I hope this helps the farmers and their potato surplus

I'm not Belgian but I'll absolutely do it in solidarity, I might even do it 4 times a week if it means bettering the world

I wonder what their source is? I've not seen it on the news on TV, nor read it in the newspapers yesterday or today. And I live in Belgium 

But the problem described in the article could be possible. I ain't gonna eat fries 2x a day though, I'm on a diet
