Cohen: STOP Banning Gay Men Blood Donations!

Cohen recovered from coronavirus but got rejected from donating antibodies due to the FDA’s donation restrictions for gay and bisexual men.

“This virus is ravaging our planet. The FDA says there is an urgent need for plasma from survivors. All donated blood is screened for HIV, and a rapid HIV test can be done in 20 minutes or less. Why are members of my community being excluded from helping out when so many people are sick and dying? Maybe because we’re valuing stigma over science… My blood could save a life but instead it’s over here boiling.”

Do you think the U.S. should allow blood donations from gay and bisexual men, GGD?

Yes they should absolutely be allowed. The covid antibodies could help so many people but no, they don't want it just because someone is gay.

They test all collected blood for diseases anyway, so why restrict? I understand there's incubation periods but that's for everyone.

Yeah, I don't get why they can't just require everyone to take an STD test or something? Seems pretty anachronistic to me, and they could really increase their supply of blood

Can you just lie and say your straight when donating blood?

i'd assume so. There's a lot of "straight" men who go cheat on their wives with men and are still out here donating blood, bet.

It's an outdated law. It only made sense back in the 80's when they didn't know much about HIV transmission and it was prevalent mostly among gay men.

HIV now affects across all groups and we have better technology and understand all of it better. They recently lowered the months required of abstaining from sex from 12 months to 3. Still ridiculous for any sexually active adult.

If a gay man took an HIV test, tested negative, and brought proof could they donate then?

Still seems outrageous they would have to go through all that to potentially save lives. Last I heard, blood supply was low.

Nope, it's simply not allowed, no matter what.

If you've not had sex with a man in the last 12 months, they may allow.

i think if you want to, it's a 3-4 month period. they test you, but then send you home and you have to come back in 3 months so they can make sure you didn't have an early infection of HIV when they originally tested you. when you come back, if you test negative again, they'll take your blood. they used to make you wait 12 months. it's all really, really, ****ed up

My mom sent me a thing saying during this time they’ve relaxed it to three months. Still screwed up

Once I wanted to donate my blood plasma and the lady who examined me asked if I had contact with people of HIV-risky communities & if I had ever had sex with a man. She said I couldn't donate my plasma if that's the case, so a b*tch had to lie :ohwell:
