Ryan Tedder: It’s “Tone-deaf” to release an album right now

I don’t think that artists who put out music now care that much about sales. Maybe they’re not as materialistic as he is and they think about how the music will help to get tru the quarantine for some fans. How’s that tone-deaf? Not everything is about bussiness. Sometimes you have to make a sacrifice if you think it’s just what you want and have to do at these times

Lots of people connect with music on a level beyond just liking it. You clearly don’t. You don’t need to put down people who do just because you don’t understand it

Plenty of people think playing video games and reading manga is sad :reductive:

Yes but how are you sure you're gonna connect to music that's not even out yet?

I understand that a person can connect to music. I got through some bad sh!t because of ARTPOP. But it wasn't solely ARTPOP. I had friends and stuff. I would have most assuredly killed myself if all I had to rely on was ARTPOP.

But many of you guys are acting like music is the only thing you can do, is all I'm saying. And it has to be new. And doubt as many of you guys who are complaining actually have some mental disorders to go with that need.

You can connect to movies. Music. Manga. Podcasts. Anime. Videogames.

Plus also, there's videogames that you can spend 100+ hours on. I'm sure that would destroy some Quarantine hours. And bring forth a connection.

For everyone who said she was crying because it leaked and would’ve delayed it if it didn’t. She may have been thinking of it but clearly she’s happy she released it

I see both sides of the argument.

To answer the OP question, I think Gaga (and other artists), waiting to release music when things slowly start going back to normal makes the most sense during this time. But, I wish artists would stop this whole PR response of why they're not releasing their album. It's ultimately about money, and it's a business. Why not just say that? He contradicts himself through the entire interview. I don't mind that an artist is delaying their album, but I wish they would just be honest and say, "Hey, I can't give this album the proper treatment it deserves. I can't promote it, tour it, give interviews etc. So I am holding off until things get better and we can enjoy the music more." Like, it's not that deep and I don't need him or anybody else babbling on and making excuses when it ultimately comes down to money and wanting an album to perform well. It's not really going to right now if it's released, and I think we all know that and it's okay. I would respect an artist more if they just were honest about it.

Agreed 100%. But I also hope some artists think of their fans and realize that they can’t deprive new music until 2021, because that’s realistically when a full and proper era for any album can be accomplished. This is unfortunately the way of the world for the next several months and I don’t think the entire music industry should be on hold because of it.

He’s right and he knows what he’s talking about unlike most stans.

Dua Lipa released an album and literally no one cares about it now. It’s come and gone. Sadly.

Gaga made a smart move with the delay. Chromatica and Gaga deserve more attention than what it would get if released on April 10th. Late June or early July seems to be the best date to release. Sure, the virus will still be here, but it may be contained just a bit.

What are you talking about Dua literally has the number 2 pop album behind The Weeknd above Justin Bieber.

And the #4 song worldwide on Spotify.

The #7 song on Spotify in the US but if you take away the rap songs it's #2 behind Blinding lights.

She is literally the IT pop girl for this cycle of music.

And let's not act like Gaga didn't releae a totally new song and video during the same time and got no where.

Back before the digital era, it would be a huge mistake. But now people don't have to leave their houses to buy anything and many digitally download anyway. Music can also be made and released in the way that other forms of art, like movie and theatre can't, so why not? Music is one of the few things keeping anyone sane right now. If an artist wants to risk no promo to put out new music for their fans, more power to them. I understand why big artists who rely on big hits as part of their brand are delaying (it would be unwise for Gaga to release when SL didn't get the reception we hoped and she's not had a truly massive big worldwide hit from a solo studio album since 2011) but I don't see why bands like OneRepublic need to be so focused on "we need a hit to make this album sell" (because that's the reason they're holding off, let's be real) as they were never that big as album sellers anyway.

The question I really want to know is: what will this mean for the Grammys if albums keep getting delayed? I know the eligiability period for the Emmy's is being delayed and potentially the Oscars too. Not only that, but there's apparently word that some movies simply won't get made when things get back to normal as schedules have moved on and it's hard enough to get everyone in the same place at the same time as it is without cancelling and re-scheduling. It's a very shaky time for the arts indeed.

This. Also. We know that Katy, Rihanna & Adele all had projects and probably tours they were planning for 2020/2021. So now basically every major artist is going to be rescheduling tours, releases, competing for promo time, magazine covers, tour dates if they ALL wait for this to be “over.” When a few could release now or in the next few months and avoid that issue.
