Even though the nature of her videos was subversive from the get-go in a way because she was mixing sex with darker/bizarre themes she still had a sort of "sex monster *****" appeal to her aesthetic. We can see that in Poker Face, Bad Romance, Alejandro, Telephone, Edge of Glory, You and I, Applause, G.U.Y. at the very least. Sure some songs had more to do with sex than the latest singles (neither p.i. nor m.r. or even sl are sexual in nature) but the same can be said about a lot of her other singles in which she was nevertheless presenting herself in a provocative/controversial sexual manner. What do you guys think are the reasons for that? Maybe she feels that, like her male counterparts she does not have to sell her sex appeal in order to be a sucessful popstar and rather wants to entertain in other manners. I do feel however that there is a simultaneity in the lack of sexual appeal and the loss of quality of her music videos, not sure if they are in any way related. She creates and re-creates herself. Sometimes her 'look' is 'for' LGBTQ fans... So her 'sexy' isn't necessarily what straight people care about. like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. With Gaga, sexuality always felt like it was part of the art. It has never felt like a gimmick to get straight guys to watch her videos like with many other female pop stars. you do have a point, you know when I referred to her a sex monster I was kinda referring to that subversive, empowering aesthethic
Smother Em Eh 7,131
She never was sexy in the way Beyoncé, Rihanna, Britney and Katy were but I think that’s a good thing. She pushed the boundaries of what sexy could be and did it artistically. Get Applause & G.U.Y to 1B views!
OMonster 14,675
The difference with Gaga's sexuality and sex appeal, imo, is that it is not formed or designed for the male gaze or romantic, sexual desire. It's formed, mostly, on the backs of the kind of 'sex' that drag, LGBT and performance artists sell. It's more artistic and camp, than conventional and standardly attractive. subtext / fantasy
NickiMinajStan 6,892
I think it's the opposite actually. I think in the past her main interest was to look "artistic" and weird. She looks far more conventional now, all the time, even in videos. She wasn't going for "sexy" during ARTPOP and Born This Way. She was going for "outsider", whatever. She very clearly was not going for "sexy" here: But she evidently was here: Her public image is far "sexier" and conventionally attractive as of late, than it ever was, in my opinion. I think she just got bored of always looking weird, I mean you can't do the same thing all the time. I think during and after Joanne, her looks are more traditionally "sexy" than they were during her first albums. As for the videos specifically... maybe she's just not in that mood? like, for sexy videos. She actually seems like a very... traditional woman to me. She was younger when she released those videos, and she's been consistently trying to settle down for a while now (or so it seems, I'm not her close friend, I have no idea what she actually wants in life ). I think she's just not with that energy RN, I think she sort of wants a family and stuff, so she's just not currently interested in her actual videos being overly sexual. It might just not reflect her state of mind as of now. But if we strictly talk about her aesthetic, I think she looks "sexier" now. Back then she was "weird", now she is more vainilla sexy. Babylon98 4,830
Guys for the last time, when I said sexy I actually meant subersive sexually in a weird haunting way, sex monster, drag lgbt etc. so I agree with a lot of you, maybe I worded things wrong. McYves 1,612
I mean, I don't think she ever TRIED to be "sexy" (at least not in a traditional basic way). I remember her saying something like: What I do is meant to make people think "I don't know if this is sexy or just weird." But she's still a very young woman, I'm pretty sure she will keep BEING sexy without even trying . Don't wanna kiss, don't wanna touch, just drink my ****ing coffee and watch 90's cartoons and hush

And since she's been with michael, she seems less concerned with her 'sex' appeal. like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still.
