Idk about the accuracy of this maybe a Britney stan could help... From what I know the person who does back up vocals for Britney obviously records and tries to make her vocals match Britney's and the producer used the backup vocals more than Britney's. Like on the track "Alien" Britney's real voice  is no where to be found..  I've also heard she didn't wanna record it so they had her back up singer do it for her but I'm not sure which is true.

it wasn't the album she originally wanted to do and her team basically scrapped the direction she wanted to go down again and she had no control  During the Glory era she mentioned how since the conservatorship she didn't have much control over her music and she finally got control with Glory and got to make the album she wanted and that it was like 'her baby' (she said this on an interview but the conservatorship part got scrapped from the broadcast). She was extremely involved in the making of Glory compared to Britney Joan, she even helped create the background music, the claps etc and other background sound effects.

So basically when Britney Jean was ready to be released, it ended up leaking a song from the album (Passenger), when it did, some fans suspected that Britney's voice was different, it sounded like the voice of another singer.  After that, the song producer (I don't remember the name) tweeted that what actually leaked was a DEMO of the song sung by another artist and that the final version would be different.  However, when the album was officially released, the version contained was the same as the one leaked, so the question remained.  Not only Passenger, but several other tracks had different vocals, so it was revealed that most of the songs were sung by Britney's backing vocalist, Mayah Marie, who has a very similar voice to Britney. Myah obviously denied what happened, but if we listen to the stems, we will see that some parts were sung by her.

So it's BASICALLY that, but the album recording and rollout was a pure mess
