I would agree insofar as normally her “meaningful” songs are a bit schmaltzy and maudlin (to quote her grandmother lol). Not bad, of course, but they all fall into a similar category in that sense, you know? I think this was a song very well-executed and purposeful in calling out labels trying to make her fake which is not a topic that gets so straightforwardly addressed. Using the auto-tune was a really smart move that pulled it off so well. I don’t think the song gets enough credit for its thoughtfulness. The depth of The Fame is not the same kind of depth she explored on other albums. She was very purposefully plastic and satirical whereas every album after she has tried to shatter that for “authenticity” (no shade; all her albums are great). Because of that I think songs that are pretty thoughtful like this one get paid dust.
