Does Gaga need to revamp her ways of promotion?

Nothing screams the toilet of the internet quite like Tik Tok. Yes, it’s generated trendy hits but will people be using tik tok in 5 or 10 years time? Probably not.

I agree new strategies are imperative to adapt to an ever-changing market and the internet is more essential than ever,  but she doesn’t need to cheapen her brand in the process.

She most certainly does. The Weeknd is doing an incredible job marketing his album with short films and signed album copies and posters for sale on his store and making over-the-top artistic visuals. Beyoncé did the surprise release of a visual album twice and it worked perfectly for her. Lady Gaga and Madonna definitely need to follow that lead and abandon the outdated form of promo of going to Jimmy Fallon or other cheesy shows for a half-assed attempt at comedy and some pre-recorded uninspired performances and outfits.

Billboards and small tv show performances are dated concepts and I wouldn’t say go for TikTok or social media bloggers, but at least create some genuinely special content and then make a billboard about them or find a big event to debut it at or tease it. Sadly, the recent content don’t even excite me as a fan, let alone the public who doesn’t follow her tweets or discuss her 24/7 on forums. I’d say go live, do Q&As on social media, interact with fans. Cardi B is more popular for her Instagram stories than her music, and she goes viral that way. Gaga doesn’t do that, and same for Madonna. It’s like both are stuck in a state in-between, neither marketing themselves like modern artists do no are rare and unreachable like Adele and break the internet with just a selfie on the beach or a low quality video at a party about her album’s release date...

Times have changed and the way people consume media and art did too. Also, people crave artistic well-made visuals and Gaga hasn’t been serving any of those recently even though she restarted the trend with revolutionizing music videos at the beginning of her career. She needs to get back to that and further evolve with that concept and abandon the whole social media teasing and promises because no one outside of this forum ever knows it cares about finding clues in tweets or promises made in 5 minute interviews.

I agree.

But regarding promo shows, I think they are still effective. Childish Gambino and Billie Eillish both did well on SNL in recent times. Gaga has historically done well after a promo performance too. So I do think that is something that she can still do in addition to revamping other aspects of her promotion.

I wouldn't say Tik Tok is guarantee that a song is going to get a lot of attention. Some of the most random songs become viral and they usually don't plan it that way. That song Tusa featuring Nicki Minaj became a meme for like 3 months here in Latin America and I'm sure they didn't plan it. Artists like Bad Bunny, Drake and Rihanna do have this advantage because people around 17-28 are eating everything they come up with. Katy Perry tried to force her song Swish Swish become a viral moment using internet memes and stuff like that and failed miserably, not to mention it looks like trying too hard.

But to be honest I like what Gaga does now. I'm pretty sure she is not looking to follow the rules of what pop music usually does and she likes to go on her own path, it's been that way for a while. I mean come on, Joanne, A Star Is Born, Cheek To Cheek, she's on another level.

I'm talking about the promo BEFORE the virus. No one is complaining about the post-pandemic silence. That is not what this thread is about at all.

The time gap from SL to Corona is so small though.....:emma:

There was quite a bit of promo done in that 1-2 weeks though from her team.

We can also judge the Joanne era promotion.

My point is, her team's idea of promotion is more of an old school method of billboards, TV spots, etc. The question is, is that relevant in 2020?

We saw how they were behind on streaming during Joanne era. They have done a MUCH better job at the start of this era. So they ARE improving. Are there other ways to improve?

I wouldn’t mind that if she does something that truly stands out, something in the quality of Paparazzi performance at VMAs, Marry the Night at AMAs and the tribute to Alexander McQueen. It’s like those were among her absolute best but for some reason, she only went down from there and her tours could never light a candle to that amount of creative brilliance. I want that back... so much.

While Gaga has an amazing voice, she’s always been more of a visual artist than just a singer. It’s an integral part of her identity.

Definitely.... I mean, huge billboards are fine, but they're really expensive and while they make someone aware that the artist is preparing something new, people need to hear the music in order to actually buy the song/album , not stare at some huge ass photo ... with the money spent on the billboards, the record label could increase the budget for videos and performances.

It depends on how bad Coronavirus is whenever she releases Chromatica.

In my opinion most of the current popular ways of promo for music are all just gimmicks in an attempt to go viral. Maybe she could be more active on social media here or there but tbh I don't think any other changes are worth it.

I’m not a fan of Drake but it doesn’t sacrifice his artistry or whatever, it just shows that he’s taking creative routes to promote his music. Which is cool. We’re in new times and artists are trying new things.

I’ve yet to see one positive comment from you about...anything

Can’t tell if you’re serious or not. But changing your musical route and promotion to cater to children is desperate.

Here’s a positive comment for you. Grimes and The Weeknd have excellent promo and the best albums of the year so far.
