this used to be the case with teenyboppers and doo-whoop music in the 60 years ago sis, when pop music was emerging as a "new" genre. you know damn well that nowadays pop music refers to Britney, Gaga, Ariana etc.

if pop music relies in popular then rap and hip-hop would be labeled as pop and that's not the case. quality has absolutely nothing to do with chart success, though in some cases that does happen at the same time

Exactly as you pointed out, pop is an ever evolving genre that relies around what is popular. Pop means popularity and to claim that you saved this genre you unfortunately need it. Moreover, Hip hop is no different than pop, in fact Ariana is a mixture of pop and many urban and trap influences. All hip hop hits are pop to an extend as well. Rap an hip hop are labeled as pop in the sense that they have pop influences and pop's popularity and this happens in in many music reviews.

But none of them saved pop music. You can't save pop without an extremelly successfull album.

then why was Carly credited for saving pop after EVERYONE wrote her off, with a critically acclaimed album that ended up on many end of decade lists and is considered one of the best pop albums of all time? :rip:

More like opinions... but anyway, my main point is that so many users Dua to put down Gaga, praised her, said she is better and more successful only for her album to do underwhelming-ish. Karma. :vegas:

I mean DSN did outeverything SL. And everything she's presented this era has been better than anything Gaga put out since ARTPOP. People are entitled to their correct opinions :billie:

How is that different from what you are doing rn? Bringing down Dua to praise Gaga.

It may be petty but I just continued what has been started. :billie:

Chile they are a lost cause. If they truly cared about sales they would claim Tay as the queen of pop. But they keep bashing her regardless. Now that the case is quality they switched to sales, yeah they switched like baguettes :billie:

Funny thing is that those are ARTPOP stans who are claiming that sales determine if something is good.. :billie:

Now that the narrative changed from ''sales don't matter'' (yet @Regina George liked your comment even though it goes against everything she has said :sure:), Don't Start Now is no longer her current single, why not compared SL with Physical?

Shallow outdid anything by Dua lipa and it's fair to say she will never have a trio as widely succesful as Poker Face- Bad Romance - Shallow. Don't Start Now itself had a SL-like trajectory in its first month.

The other post part of your post is so subjective and wrong that I won't comment.

just because hip-hip artists mix what are clearly pop influences in order to be commercial (like Cardi B and Lil Nas X) and vice-versa with Ariana doesn't mean that hip-hip is pop :rip:  it speaks more to the fact that pop it's entirely its own thing

urban music and mumble rappers are extremely popular at the moment but that is not pop music, which according to your criteria, it should be

I said “sales don’t matter when it comes to quality”

Please try to understand that :billie:

Also lead single should be compared to lead singles. Tee hee

You were saying Dua was underperforming so I corrected you.

Let's not compare an OST song from a very successful movie to a lead single. Or a song second single that was never promoted to a lead single. SL vs DSN is a fair comparison, both are the lead singles from a solo pop album. :billie:

Anything that goes to #1 or let's say top 3 is by default pop. Pop and hip hop and genres are so intertwined that you don't need to make any kind of effort to see that. Pop-rap is a genre on its own and many of the hits of the last years are part of this genre - take any music publication and you'll see exactly that.
