Peroxide555 587
Half a review I wrote... might finish it later In the mindst of a global health crisis, the likes of which the world hasn’t seen since the Spanish Flu, trust Kylie Minogue’s spiritual successor to bless our ears with a record that’s about one thing, and one thing only - fun. Ever since Dua Lipa started her glacially slow ascent to female pop superstardom, she has struggled to find a grounded identity. Her 2017 eponymous debut featured mostly breezy, tropical inspired mid-tempo pop tunes custom designed for radio stations; whilst the record has merit, it failed to showcase what Dua was really about. It would take several collaborations with the likes of Calvin Harris, Mark Ronson and Diplo for her to broaden her soundscape into something entirely new for her, in order to move her music forward, Dua needed to look backwards. The pop-stars new found superpower which she homes with ice-cool confidence on her second album see’s her exploring disco, funk, 90’s club culture and new wave; she creates her musical pallet from seemingly studying the best of what has come before. Future Nostalgia brings together all the joy, irreverence and personality of the genres yesterday and injects them into your ear as if it’s a long, drawn shot of dopamine. The title track evokes the quintessential signature throwback seen on an early Lady Gaga project, the track burst with attitude, as Dua confidently asserts that her music is very, very good; and frankly she isn’t wrong. “Don’t Start Now’s” simmering, brassy baseline collides beautifully with a very subtle nod to early 2000’s trance on the pre-chorus, “Don’t show up, don’t come out” she belts - a lyric that aged with enormous grace given the current global crisis. The Tove Lo penned “Cool” drops you into a silky soft bathtub of new wave synth pop, the song feels like the kind of comeback single we wanted Carly Rae to release, as Dua sings “I guess you’re ready for this song”, it’s as if she is fully aware of fantastic her material truly is. Spock 20,290
53 minutes ago, gagzus said: Pop is definitely not “mumble rap” also what even is mumble rap if you’re on about all those Male rappers that were popular like 5 YEARS AGO when pop is in a more R&B-Funk fusion centric space currently. Also radio means nothing in 2020 because all the artists who’ve done this are getting STREAMING which is what matters and music goes beyond mainstream white pop girls, we’re not gonna discredit all the black artists that have been putting disco and funk into their music the last decade almost just for some half baked electro-pop album by a white girl... and I’d trust myself personally more than a critic because I ain’t being paid for it and it’s subjective I understand but gays need to stop with this notion that just because some boring white pop girl does it it’s suddenly new and amazing, would y’all be going wild if some virtually unknown black artist made this album? Or a gay man? Probably not. And if they made it I’d still say the same it’s a 6/10 it has 4 good songs (3 of which are the singles) and the rest is meh. Lets take the album for what it is; alright but we won’t care about it come the end of the year at all why are you brining race into this when it has NOTHING to do with what I was saying, and pulling out of your ass your assumptions of my musical preferences just because I'm defending Dua against an army of salty Lady Gaga fans also using "white girl" as a put down is not cute sis, and I thought you would know since you're the one that brought race into this in the first place I merely said that pop music, as in the genre that reflects what is currently popular music right now, is mainly rap/urban/hip-hop/R&B, as evidenced by looking at the Hot 100 and the fact that pop artist from Ariana to Billie to Justin to freaking Kim Petras are doing hip-hop pop. Yes, it's not as predominant as it was a few years ago, yes, songs like Say So are popular now, but it's still the main driving force in pop music at the moment, and if you're not going to agree just for the sake of saying that that Future Nostalgia sounds basic or whatever, that's on you and thank you, because what you're saying about STREAMING further proves my point. Other than Camila, Dua and maybe Ed, the top 10 most streamed artist on Spotify are rap, hip-hop, urban artists or artists that exist in that plane. If streaming has democratized disco, and R&B-funk or whatever without the need of radio, then where is Roisin Murphy or Lion Babe and the billions of other underground artists doing precisely that at the moment, or that have been doing it for years? That's right, they're not there because music like that is NOT mainstream at the moment. Like I said, the GP is not gay twitter, and for mainstream audiences what Dua is doing IS fresh, new and does sound different than what they're used to who will love me when the night is over

(Also why tf is she the banner and not Last Gaga who has an active single presently? Da fuq) Okay so I just listened to the album. Sorry to say, it's similar to The Weeknds album in the sense that it's about four or five songs that are "okay", four or five songs which I just don't like, and one song that stands out and is a masterpiece. Physical is an absolute banger of a track. Future Nostalgia, Don't Start Now, Hallucinate, Love Again and Break My Heart are okay. Like if I was in someone's car and they were playing it, I wouldn't ask to turn it off, but I would never actively seek them out to listen again. The rest of the album I just didn't care for.
