calmar 22,064 Posted March 23, 2020 Share Posted March 23, 2020 So here's my lil review Super tight production and I love the arrangement and genres (with classical instruments and a few disco influences; Hallucinate in particular has transcendent synth effects); in that way it's similar to Carly Rae Jepsen's "Emotion". But I think I've been spoiled by Gaga - listening to the full album and not hearing much in the way of mood changes makes it monotonous, and some of the tracks in my opinion feel lacking in conviction. Perhaps the most remarkable thing is, of course, the 80s influences that Dua herself said were present - but I didn't just hear Madonna and Kylie. I'm sure people have compared Dua's "Physical" to Olivia Newton-John's 1981 single of the same name countless times by now, but when the hook has the same lyrics, it's a bit too much on the nose for me. The same goes for one of the masked synths in "Love Again", comparable to John Williams' "The Imperial March" (1980), and the sung-spoken chorus of "Break My Heart" has to be a direct sample of the iconic guitar riff from INXS' "Love Me Again" (1987). The final track, "Boys Will Be Boys", feels like a song written to sound like the closer - like Dua felt urged to make a "wave your hands to this in stadiums" song. It just ends, as do some other mid-album tracks, too abruptly. Overall, I think I'd prefer hearing music inspired by things, not directly lifted, and those with some conviction in them. So for that, and just the lack of diversity (it feels like a countertop - polished, but flat), it gets a 6/10 from me. 俺の勝利は揺るぎない Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
