YouTube & Netflix agreed to reduce the quality of their streams to protect European Internet data hubs. Due to the outbreak of the corona virus and people committing to social distancing, the streaming platforms experienced a huge spike in traffic. The Swiss government already instructed their population to not use streaming services less frequently because the data of the video streams clogs & paralyzes important digital infrastructure. YouTube will stream in 320p/480p as the standard option from now on for the next 30 days(users will still be allowed to stream in HD, it just won't be the standard anymore) , while Netflix promised to reduce the bitrate of its video streams in order to reduce the streaming data by 25%.

Chromatic Lover

Does this mean Gaga, would benefit from this upsurge in traffic? I was once a pioneer for postponing Chromatica but releasing as usual might work in her favor.

They just want to polarize or to look like they do something to help. The biggest datahub DE-CIX in Frankfurt has a capacity of over 50 Terabit a second and the new world record recently is just over 9 Terabit a second. And they announced that they can absolutely handle everything that's coming in the next months.

Purrrrrr

wait what? Have I read it wrong? So during countries locking down they're going to reduce quality of what all of us have left to sit at home and do? :wtfga:

Or are they saying it's too much to handle? which I find hard to grasp

well, we'll have to listen to Chromatica in low quality (64kbps) and watch second single's music video in 128p  :poot:

Yes, that's exactly what they're doing. Because video streams cause exorbitantly high data movements. Countries like Germany can mostly handle the spike of data (even though it is pretty much still up to how good the local datahubs and cables are,  rural Germany has been experiencing extremely slow internet since the lockdown), but smaller countries likes Switzerland can't handle the increase of traffic.

Economy

Here in Canada too I've noticed certain stuff online has gotten slower Netflix included.

I didn't notice any difference in the quality but, it's easier now for it to go thru periods where it freezes every so often which is kind of annoying because I haven't been used to frequently slower internet since like 2012 :emma:
