It's a scary time right now, but yes being in Canada is still a blessing. There are some countries that completely ignore covid and/or have little to no resources It's measures that make sense because it's basically an immediate shutdown of stuff and ppl off work so imediate help and transfers help more The traditional forms of stimulus like increased infrastructure spending or tax cuts take too much time to ripple thru economy. They are more effective when an economy ends the peak of its business cycle and slows down and needs a boost to activity In this case the nature of the economic shock needs a sudden burst of liquidity not Riple effect stimulus

The biggest help for me is if they enhance or extend EI benefits since finding work now will be like impossible and for my parents the mortgage deferrals would help the most. The Chile benefit increases I imagine won't be massive so it's more like a little bonus for families And U bought a house? Nice. Here in Canada young ppl can't cuz our housing crisis has reached gigantic proportions. U have no idea how bad it is here. By almost every measure Canada ranks near the top of most unaffordable housing Even with our higher minimum wages and better social security programs our homeless rate managed to surpass the US some years ago. Our average home price is now double the US Sorry for ranting off topic. The housing crisis is extremely frustrating to young ppl like me. It makes it impossible to start a future It's good for my grandparents in Toronto whose house it's worth $1.4 Million or for my parents whose small house near slums is now worth over $600,000 despite being old, kinda small and in a bad area But for my generation that did not get into the market 15-20 years ago or more, these rents and home prices are agravating Our 20 year housing boom is about to surpass Switzerlands and Japans housing booms that crashed in the 1990s which are the longest in history Hopefully if theres 1 benefit of this economic crisis is that it will take heat off market but I'm not optimistic The only reason we were able to buy a house in the first place was 1. we got a VA loan & 2. my mom helped us pay the closing costs before she died. That's why I'm so bothered by this crisis. It was really the last gift that my mom was able to give me and it just hurts at the idea that I could lose it because of the corona virus and an economy outside of my control. Here in Canada even with help in closing costs and stuff it's pretty much impossible... It's honestly the single biggest factor that destroyed economic prosperity for an entire generation I know it's not good anywhere including the US but trust me, here it's exeptionally bad. And the stats prove it. Imagine if the US housing crash didn't happen in 2007/2008 and prices kept going up until now for 20 years uninterrupted. That's essentially what's happened in Canada But yeah, I hope ur able to pull thru loosing a house would be devestating. And sorry about ur mom passing away, I actually didn't even know about that about u

Did u get laid off from a pace u worked at for some time? If so they should have given u a record of employment and u use that to file it with the code and apply online If u did not work for a place and get record of employment usually u don't qualify... This is the stuff they are discussing, how to help those who don't technically qualify. But I don't know enough details about that right now or how it's gonna work includes ng those suppos d bi-weekly payments. I assume ud have to apply for that but I honestly don't know how ud do it I'm sure they will let more information out

And sorry about ur mom passing away, I actually didn't even know about that about u It's totally off topic to the original post but that's why you see me so vehemently for Bernie, especially Medicare for All. She passed away at age 45 from stage IV colon cancer. Because you don't typically get a colonoscopy until at least age 50, she never had a chance by the time they found it (it had almost killed her by the time they found it bc it had blocked her colon entirely, spread to her liver and both lungs). She always had enough money to be insured but never went to the doctor because (she cleaned houses for a living) any time off meant money she wasn't making. She was diagnosed in 2017 and passed away on new years day of 2019. I actually had a dream where I died but yet was alive at the same time when I woke up on December 31st. I literally drove from Florida to North Carolina after I got off work that day and she passed away within 15 hours of me getting back home to see her. It's the single most important issue to me that everybody in our country has healthcare regardless of income knowing what happened to my mom. I don't really think that it would have been found in time other wise but if we had a healthcare system that didn't cost exorbitant amounts of money I would know that there really was nothing that could have been done to save her. I get the record of employment from them (which they submitted online already so I just had to use the code for EI application) If ur self-employed or or work as a subcontractor, or very few hours that does not usually qualify for EI... I'm not sure how the application process for the current situation where ppl who don't usually qualify would work What's ur employment history? Did u get laid off recently? We're u self employed? gabeoz 7,915
I really hope that they do start providing some type of UBI in the US, at least for the duration of the pandemic. San Antonio is pretty much a ghost town, I work off tips and for the past few days my boss said to not even come in because there’s absolutely no business. but since the restaurant is still technically open, I can’t file for unemployment in the meantime

I know this may not be comforting for u to hear but if that was the case she probably wouldn't have been saved in Canada either We also don't typically do colonoscopies until age 50 either. I mean it can be done if u have a specific family history or have symptoms of something but just as a checkup it won't be done before 50 That fact that some of our healthcare is free (not all, unlike Europe some of our segments are still privatized) doesn't mean the resources are unlimited u basically still get restrictions But I get what u mean tho. Healthcare is something that SHOULD be accessible to everyone not just those who can afford it and the current US system is indeed unnecessarily expensive

Like I said, if the system was different, I feel less of a feeling of 'what if'. She was someone who also had irritable bowl syndrome or so the doctors said at one point a few years before her diagnosis. I still wonder if they just got it wrong and mistook what was really going on as IBS when it was actually the cancer all along. At any rate, even in the best of circumstances, my mom would have had to push over and over again and they would have spend quite a lot of time narrowing out other possibilities before they figured out it was colon cancer. I've read in several forums of people around my mom's age who found out only after the doctors diagnosed it as a number of other things first. But the lengths she would have gone through to figure that out would be money she would have never been able to afford in our healthcare system as it is here today. I have colon problems myself (have for years) and it's diagnosed as IBS. But I believe the diagnosis may be accurate cuz since I stopped eating my trigger foods my symptoms are very mild now But I also have a family history of colon cancer and deaths from that I also never got a colonoscopy because my age and mild symptoms after diet change make the chance of it being a serious problem very unlikely so the healthcare system doesn't wanna spend money on me To some extent I understand. Healthcare is the most expensive service for the Government in many Countries including mine. Some degree of prioritization and resource conservation is necessary. But it still sucks
