No one is saying that it's 'some flu' (though it will be for most people!) but some people are trying to be positive and you're there jumping down their throats practically saying that we're doomed

Nowhere am I jumping down their throats or saying things like "we are all doomed" but you are making it seem like its no big deal, which is nice to have to tell yourself when you want to calm down but the reality is very different.  There's a difference between dreaming, talking reality and scaremongering. You've got to know the truth and prepare for it, rather than thinking everything will be totally fine and being very unprepared. The UK as a whole seems to be very unprepared and is following all the mistakes the Italians made

There have been cases of reinfection.

And survivors of infection can have lifelong respiratory problems and reduced lung capacity.

For some it can be like living with HIV for the rest of your life.

There have also been human-to-dog transmissions.

It’s not the end of the world but it is an entirely brand new virus with repercussions that will continue to unfold and affect the whole word into the future.

How on earth would we know this when it's only been around for 4 months?

Cases of reinfection are extremely rare at this point. But again... it's only been around 4 months.

Cases of reinfection have been linked to having an immunodeficiency.

I'd like to see the equivalent to HIV if you have it? To date there has only been one study conducted which suggested there may be some after-effects on organs and lung capacity however it is way too early to say for sure. They also suggest lung capacity can be improved and recover.

Theres only been one incident of a human-to-dog transmission,  a low-level one as well. Researches have suggested this isnt really a concern.

I know you're just trying to stress the severity but this just comes across as scaremongering which doesnt help at all.

I’m not doing that, I come from a background in mathematics/statistics and my approach to the pandemic is based on risk and uncertainty. This is a brand new virus that has completely unknown risks that cannot even be measured, let alone the conditional, aggregate and higher-order effects on our healthcare system at large. Of course we don’t know the long-term effects because it is a brand new virus.

It could very well fizzle out like the Ebola pandemic of the 1990s. Or it could become as catastrophic as the Spanish flu of 1918. Or it could linger with us like HIV, which even though is considered “contained” still has killed nearly 40 million people over 38 years. We simply do not know the trajectory because we are only in the early stages of the pandemic.

If this is scary, then people need to face that fear instead of pretending that the risks don’t exist simply because there hasn’t been enough time or research to identify let alone ascertain the risks. If we don’t know, we don’t know. But we can at least learn from past pandemics how to minimise risks in these crucial early stages.

You just answered your own question. The long-term risks have not even yet manifested. However we know from the genetics of other coronaviruses that this kind of virus is, loosely speaking, a hybrid between flu and HIV. Based on the fact that this family of viruses originated in bats, we also know that most viruses that go from bats-humans also are capable of infecting cattle and other livestock. Could this virus potentially infect our food supply? It is possible. We could even have a new mad cow disease epidemic, even “after” the current pandemic is over.

This is what the current science tells us, but the long term research is still months or years away. As the virus lives inside the human biome, it shall too evolve. So far, what we don’tknow far exceeds what is known, and even what is known is only conjectured.

not the time to live in rose colored glass. this is about being realistic and preparing for something that we dont fully grasp the consequences of yet. it might be your way to cope with anxiety, but it can be also irresponsible and generate attitudes of indifference and imprudence.

Seeing rumours London will be on lockdown by the weekend, potentially enforced by the army.
