US box office plunges amid pandemic

Ticket sales in North America hit their lowest levels in more than two decades, generating roughly $55.3 million between Friday and Sunday. Box office numbers have not been this low since the Sept. 15 to 17 weekend in 2000

...

Receipts dropped 45% from last weekend while only one movie, Disney-Pixar’s “Onward,” made more than $10 million over the three-day stretch. The steep decline pushed the year-to-date box office down almost 9%, according to Comscore.

Domestic revenues were inevitably going to plummet this weekend because AMC and Regal, two of the biggest movie theater chains, and several other circuits like Alamo Drafthouse and Arclight, cut capacity in individual auditoriums by 50% to avoid crowding in wake of the pandemic. Reducing the amount of tickets sold per theater helped multiplexes comply with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for “social distancing.” Theaters also kept room between rows and seats to ensure patrons had ample space.

Onward dropped over 70% compared to its opening week, last week. :saladga:

It's so unfortunate. Especially because Pixar always brings quality to the movies.

I wonder if Disney will re-release it at some point.

Sucks for the people who will be affected by this but also glad to know that people are taking social distancing seriously. I still see people a lot of people out and about where I'm at :madge:

I don't think so... They have a lot of releases planned for this year and also the next one...

I just saw Onward a few days ago and the theatre was a lot less full then usual. Same thing when i saw the hunt last night. It’s a shame this is happening now because those movies were both really good.

I think they’ll have extended runs no? I’m ashamed of myself for missing Onward. :rip:

Meanwhile Mulan has been pushed back indefinitely.

Please just release it on Disney Plus.

Well, my state in the US has just ordered all movie theaters to shutter, along with restaurants, bars, fitness centers, etc. (Restaurants can still offer delivery and takeout.)
