Harvard Researchers Say Some Social Distancing May Be Needed Into 2022

People around the world might need to practice some level of social distancing intermittently through 2022 to stop Covid-19 from surging anew and overwhelming hospital systems, a group of Harvard disease researchers said Tuesday.

Lifting social-distancing measures all at once could risk simply delaying the epidemic’s peak and potentially making it more severe, the scientists warned in an article published Tuesday in the journal Science.

Why Do Italians Test Positive After Symptoms Are Long Gone?

In hard-hit northern Italy, officials have decided they have to extend quarantine from 14 to 28 days. Their reasoning could have profound implications for the U.S. ending lockdown.

Following the Italian Health Institute guidelines for releasing someone from self-isolation, Politi was tested again two weeks after his positive swab. But, fever-free and with no symptoms at all, he tested positive once more. The test was carried out a week later, 21 days after his diagnosis, and he still tested positive for the virus. Now, 30 days later, Politi has just tested positive again, calling into question just how long the novel coronavirus stays in some people’s systems and whether that might play a role in why, despite a month-long draconian lockdown, Italy just can’t seem to shake the virus.

Is no one questioning the validity of the test though?

Coronavirus could halt L.A. concerts, sporting events until 2021, Garcetti says

Los Angeles may hold off on allowing big gatherings until 2021 because of the coronavirus threat, according to an internal Los Angeles Fire Department email reviewed by The Times.

Mayor Eric Garcetti raised the issue during his weekly briefing Monday with a group of high-level staff from several departments, including Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas. Garcetti indicated during the conference call that “large gatherings such as concerts and sporting events may not be approved in the city for at least 1 year,” according to the email.

LAFD Deputy Chief Trevor Richmond wrote the email summarizing Terrazas’ meeting with Garcetti and others, and sent it Tuesday to several fire department staffers. The email was reviewed by The Times.

Facebook cancels large events through June 2021

To mitigate the continued spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, Facebook is cancelling all physical events with 50 or more people through June 2021, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday. Additionally, he said, the vast majority of Facebook's workforce will continue working from home at least through the end of May.

Whispering

In answer to the hit and run:

There are 45,000 deaths in the US in a month, despite the fact that everything is shut down. No school, college, graduation, sports, shopping, church services, weddings, funerals, concerts, music festivals, family gatherings, eating at restaurants, night life, going to movies, going to the gym, children’s activities, craft fairs, vacations, weekend trips, conventions, going to work, business trips, business lunches and dinners, etc. These things do not get closed down during flu season.

The average person comes in contact with hundreds upon hundreds, sometimes thousands of people every week. Now, people are coming in contact with their significant other or their family unit on a daily basis.

The lockdowns are flattening the curve. They are protecting people. The quarantines are giving scientists time to test medicines, learn more about the strains of this particular virus, find a vaccine and test it. The quarantine is keeping our medical system from becoming completely overwhelmed, a medical system that does not have the proper amount of PPE to protect themselves yet. Their lives are INVALUABLE!

Every virus is not dangerous. Some are the common cold. Some cause very little discomfort and are not deadly.

Expert report predicts up to two more years of pandemic misery

(CNN)The new coronavirus is likely to keep spreading for at least another 18 months to two years—until 60% to 70% of the population has been infected, a team of longstanding pandemic experts predicted in a report released Thursday.

They recommended that the US prepare for a worst-case scenario that includes a second big wave of coronavirus infections in the fall and winter. Even in a best-case scenario, people will continue to die from the virus, they predicted.

"This thing's not going to stop until it infects 60 to 70 percent of people," Mike Osterholm, who directs the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota, told CNN.

"The idea that this is going to be done soon defies microbiology."

Travel restrictions will change in Hungary from Tuesday.

Previously there were unrestricted entry into the country from EU member states and Serbia.

As there is another flare-up of the epidemic in some neighboring countries, Hungary will apply a three-level classification from Tuesday. Foreigners from red countries are not allowed to enter at all, except those with a special permit. Foreigners from yellow countries are required to undergo two weeks of quarantine or two negative corona tests.

These restrictions do not apply to transit traffic or to those who have been confirmed to be infected and recovered.

Red countries: Ukraine, Belarus, most of Balkan countries, Asia and Africa

Yellow countries: Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Portugal, Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Japan, China, USA.

The number of cases in Hungary is still low (5 new cases were reported today).
