Hospitals were overwhelmed in many countries but not like we see now in China, Iran or Italy. It’s starting to happen in WS and France as well. False — within less than a calendar year in the UNITED STATES ALONE H1N1 infected 60 million Americans (1/4 the population) hospitalized between 200-400 thousand persons, and killed roughly 10-19 thousand Americans — it took about 1000 deaths in the United States before Obama declared a state of emergency

I hope I don’t get COVID-19 too, but if it’s my time then so be it. Disease is a fact of life, and if anything I feel that it just goes to show the failings of our governments for what should have already been in place for people who have illnesses. I think it’s ridiculous that my state already has schools and events cancelling, but we have no confirmed cases yet. To me, that is speaking volumes on the unnecessary fear that is being spread about this pandemic. If disease is such an issue, why should we permit such large volumes if gatherings in the first place. Honestly, follow basic hygiene and illness protocols and you should be ok. That being said, also use this as a reason to push for better legislation for peoples rights so no one is scared to take time they need when they are sick. Also I apologize if this got ranty... I have had an undisclosed amount of wine this evening. No, you're fine. All your concerns are valid. I mean, there are sooooo many ways to look at this and all the cancellations. But I think part of it is because our government in the States has no idea what they're doing. There's no leadership. So it's all just a mess. But again, hopefully this starts convincing people to wash hands and get vaccinated. 5 minutes ago, Gypsy said: Nobody is saying it isn't relevant I'm just saying the media is flogging the f*ck out of this making everyone panic. It's ridiculous and when you really look at it the recovery rate is greater than the death rate. As someone who works in the medical field us nurses really just fed up about it and how it's being portrayed Well you basically said you don't care about this because there aren't as many deaths compared to ebola. And that's an optimistic way of looking at it. I don't completely disagree. The media is only reporting what is out there already. And I've said this many times already. I'm not going to blame the media when people are going out of their way to harass and attack Asians due to the origins of corona being from China. I don't blame the media when people on Twitter/GGD/etc go and post false information that isn't confirmed by experts or the media itself. I don't blame the media when Trump is out here flip flopping on everything from saying that the virus isn't an issue and that now it is but it's a foreign issue that's attacking us... Like. And I don't blame the media for the cancellation of festivals, sporting events, etc. The media can only reflect what is happening. I saw a post today about how a health expert made an estimate about how many cases the USA might see when the corona passes through. And people were shouting "fake news" "stop causing hysteria" in the comments. For what? Reporting the stats that mirror the swine flu? We already know how bad the other outbreaks were. People should ALREADY be educated. But it's the ignorance of the people that make people go insane. And that's just my perspective. But at least the media is doing its job in reporting. SOME people may go a little too far, but people need to also be a bit more aware.

Well Til it happens to you The funny(but not really) thing is that most Americans don't even get vaccinated for the flu. So the stats on death by flu could easily be decreased. The flu can be fought, but people choose not to take advantage. That's part of the reason way the coronavirus is so scary. Even though it hasn't technically killed as many people, yet. There's no vaccine or way of knowing the impact.

I’m not leaving in US but even I know that not many Americans get vaccinated for flu. For this coronavirus, the worst part is even you get through it, the damage to your lungs is irreversible for good. That’s why I wish Gaga should stay home coz she is a singer. Also some say they are not afraid is because this is life. But they don’t even consider they can easily past it to their family or friends. It’s not just about you! In the US alone, more than 13'000 people died. Infected people? 500 MILLION WW and 61 MILLION IN THE US so no...corona virus is nothing compared to other stuff we had to deal with. Even if we had to wait 3 to 4 year for a vaccine (which won't be the case btw) it still wouldn't come near those numbers. Sis what are U smoking?? They can only confirm 18,000 people died WORLDWIDE. Did you literally just make up a number?

Someone literally said in the bus that this may wipe out a big amount of old people in the world if it is not controlled and I thought they were exaggerating but now I'm really scared for all the elderly If it spreads to them, maybe Going by what Maleficent said, if 14% of people over 60 are killed by this...and in 2018 11% of the world's population was over 60... 7.7 billion people in the world means 847 million are over 60. 14% of that is 118,580,000 We're talking about a potential death toll of over 118 million people worldwide simply because they're older than 60 that doesn't even take into account the people with conditions that would make them more vulnerable to the virus. It definitely won't get that bad but the fact that our current outlook has that as an even remote possibility is insane that's why we need to take it seriously - so it can't get that bad or anywhere near it. This is a .002% fatality rate. Coronavirus has currently infected 1000 and has killed 31. This is a fatality rate of 3%. If the coronavirus infects the same number of people as H1N1, an estimated 1,830,000 million people will die.
MelbHawker 6,583
It's about time they did. There seems to be so much hysteria around the economic impact of the virus, but there's not many people actually taking the time to read up on the actual virus itself. Every news article coming in is about travel bans, product shortages etc. Here in Australia, our GP clinics are now refusing to see people with Cold & Flu symptoms. They're being sent to clinics within hospitals for testing of this virus - a good idea in theory, but there's not many of these clinics in existence, and such a large number of people are experiencing symptoms because they're common in so many common Colds, Flus and Respiratory infections. Our supermarkets are empty of toilet paper, hand sanitizers and longlife food products (i.e. pasta, rice, flour, longlife milk etc.). The panic is so large, it's ridiculous. I can't imagine how it's going to be when our cases skyrocket (it's inevitable).
