On one hand, it shows that Billboard is able to and will adapt with the changing times. Also, I think to an extent, the addition of YouTube views is a good thing because, in my opinion, it shows public interest moreso than radio. On the other hand, though, the extent that views are factored in unfairly favors artists that get huge first week views, such as Rihanna, Justin Beiber, and the like. That's in addition to the over 27K sales of Loveeeeeee Song, over 70K sales of Pour It Up, and Stay's 306K digital sales. A total of almost 458K digital sales for Rihanna this week. Quite impressive. The Hot 100 has become more about the Billboard committee than it is about the relative merit or popularity of the songs. Suppose at the end of Olympics 100m final it suddenly came on the screen that the winner was not Usain Bolt, but someone else, because the Olympics committee decided that the victor would be the one with the lowest figure for their time multiplied by their height. I really thought it was dead by now. 2 months ago everyone was listening/singing it and now everyone seems to totally forgot about it (at least here) At least now artists will be inspired to make quality videos. It says in the Billboard article: "Shake," in fact, leads the Hot 100 with three-and-a-half times the overall chart points total of "Shop." Before the change TS was estimated to be getting 60200 chart points vs HS 22300 But for HS to have 3.5x the points of TS it must have about 210700 points which means YouTube contributed about 188400 or 89% of its points. Another way to look at it is for a song to have matched Harlem Shake on sales alone under the new rules it would have needed about 2.5 million sales in one week... now that would have been something. And the old rules "favored" artists who had the most spinned songs on top 40 radio. It's not unfair, it's just how it works. If Rihanna or Justin Bieber have huge first week views, obviously they have one of the most popular songs in that given week and the Hot 100 should reflect that.
