US Charts Discussion (Gaga single tracking: August)

Agreed that the album sales in general has been continuously plummeting since the start of the digital era as the industry itself focuses more on the sales performances of the singles being released. The sole exception would be Adele's sophomore effort, but it's one of those records that come few and far between. It seemed not even Taylor Swift's Red, her most successful era since her mainstream breakthrough Fearless, could not be able to move units around the world as much as Gaga's BTW did. It'd probably top the 5 million mark at least worldwide and 90% of it would likely come from US alone, but it'd be the singles which would eventually boost her overall sales even further. With over 55 million digital tracks sold in the US alone, Taylor's sales prowess would continue to grow.

Born This Way was the only album released in 2011 sans Adele's to pass 5 million WW. That's great.

Exactly. Born This Way was the only album released in 2011 sans Adele's to pass 5 million WW. That's great.

Probably will be part of the last set of pop albums to make that mark. Bittersweet.

Nice for Gaga to be apart of that, but also sad for the industry. Just like she'll probably be one of the last artists to have a 1M debut in the US, along with T Swift.

Those two are essentially riding the same final wave of sales before those waves turn more into splashes.

I'm dreaming of 10M in the US and around 25M worldwide

Not even The Fame, Gaga's most successful era, was able to move 10 million copies in the US (and not even half of it which is 5 million), despite all of her chart triumphs and the overwhelming public interest at that time. To sell 7-8 million copies worldwide for a sole album is already a huge accomplishment for any artist these days, especially for a pop act.

I'd probably give Taylor Swift another album or two for a 1M debut, considering her young age and her still growing fanbase. But not even her can sustain that kind of sales domination in a long run. Public interest around her would arguably soften in the coming years as new acts come every year, whether country or pop.

And even TF's numbers are inflated because of TFM deluxe

*Yep.

That's one of my biggest fears for Britney. Seeing as albums are no longer selling well, artists' will be forced to focus more on touring and single sales. Frankly, Britney isn't particularly strong in any of those areas. :rip: Her biggest digital seller is @ 3.3 million and her last record couldn't pass 2 million WW and her last tour didn't cross 70 million in overall gross. I mean, I'm not suggesting that she's over or anything like that but I just think that she will remain under the shadow of Gaga, Katy, Rihanna, and even Beyonce for a long time coming and it saddens me because I know that she probably won't do anything about it.

*-

*The Fame sold about 6 million before the re-release happened. It would of stalled @ around BTW's sales had the TFM not happened or maybe reach 3 million in the US and 8 million WW but not much more than that.

Arturo

Remember when we were exciting because we'd finally be able to track a Gaga single on the charts with Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe?

Makes me appreciate Born This Way even more :legend:

For all the crap this fan base gives it, it did really well.

Everyone's in the shadow of Gaga and Taylor in the US anyway, including recent Britney

Britney has had her turn in pop music's throne. She could retire as of today or release an acoustic album recorded in her bathroom, it would not matter anymore. Her legacy is very solid.

Gaga is getting there. ARTPOP should help her out tons, i hope so.

To be honest, the longer she's been going on the more damage she's done to her legacy.

Gaga is still building her legacy humanitarian/vocally/song-writing wise, and even performance wise with her tours. Britney is overshadowing her older (better) work with more half-assed eras each time she releases.

Well, I guess that makes me feel a bit better. :toofloppy:

Honestly, if fans were disappointed with 7 million, God knows how they'll react next time around if ARTPOP sells less. :rip: I'm ready to accept and cherish healthy sales of 4-5 million next era. And if Britney can cross 2 million WW, I'll be happy with that too.

Britney is doomed if she keeps going down the road she's in now. Her team is simply not giving her enough time to re-establish a love for music-making and enjoy herself. It bothers me. I feel like her next era won't be any different than FF. :(

haha well, i get your point, but even with half-assed eras she manages to get global hits e.g. TTWE, Womanizer, Gimme More....

ppl will always be paying attention to her no matter what.

but yeah i also fear this new era will come out as FF 2.0

BTW sold 7M, not 6M.

Universal Music's end-of-year reports are more accurate than random online trackers lol

Lemme edit that real quick. :teehee: And fans were still disappointed with that before the 7 million figure was confirmed.
