She meanders when she speaks, she always has. So does Grimes, yet the narrative surrounding Grimes is never "look how pretentious and over complicated she's being" and even if some people do feel that way it's never held against her as validation for contempt. Maybe you can argue that's because she's "alternative" and not as aggressively campy/cornry but regardless the sentiment remains. I think people's perceptions of Gaga are always so inherently and obnoxiously cynical.

This is giving me so  many ARTPOP vibes, I love it!

I became a stan because of ARTPOP. I loved the visuals, I loved the songs, and I loved the really deep (albeit, sometimes confusing) meanings that she put into that record. I feel like maybe this album, in a way, is her trying to reclaim what she lost throughout that era. I can't wait to listen to it!

Nah. During ARTPOP, she kept going on about how she would completely change music, compared herself to Koons, and also had a lyric about how "she was uncool because she was well read"...not to mention the lyrics to Venus and ARTPOP (which I love, but come on). Chromatica seems more Marianne Williamson healing crystal kooky sh*t compared to ARTPOP...where frankly she did come of as arrogant and pretentious (to be fair, men do it all the time and get no grief about it).

Now, you can absolutely read into the healing crystals/pure energy type thing as pretentious or privileged...and sure, there is a sort of privilege to be able to believe or buy into that school of thought. However, the entertainment media isn't quite as harsh towards Gaga anymore..and frankly just doesn't care about her as much right now as they did 6-10 years ago or during the era of the Bradley rumors. So I doubt she'll get dragged, because most of the entertainment media won't be dissecting her every word or taking things out of context/doing the most bad faith interpretation as possible to get clicks....and there are definitely sections of this interview...not just the main part...which could have been used to drag her unfairly....

TLDR: Fans get mad because Gaga ain't the #1 girl in the media's mind like Billie is now, but there are benefits to not being as "popular"...because the entertainment media always loves to build someone up and tear them down.

Honestly been pleasantly surprised...I googled and read a few write ups...they basically wrote it off as Gaga being a campy kook instead of pretentious. It's really the fans/stan twitter that are driving the pretentious narrative.

*Like I said in my above post, in some ways Gaga benefits from not being "the number one pop girl". The entertainment media loves to build those girls up and tear them down...they did to Gaga (and yeah, she contributed to it herself during ARTPOP too). Instead, by being a "big" star but not the "biggest/one of the top three" the press tends to be a bit milder/not analyze her every word. She still gets dragged and used for clickbait on occasion, but she doesn't have a target on her back anymore.

The targets still very much there, she's just not at the center of the circus anymore. People just throw darts when they feel like it, especially pitchfork/nme. They've historically always wanted to paint her like a clown, I don't think this article even being bothered to be published is anything less. How they really feel about this they'll let out like steam once their album review can be posted. Betting money they'll quote this explanation in their review snarkily as a tool to elaborate on how basic they find the material.
