By the time she got on SNL, Video Games was already pretty well known online. She needed a television performance to get recognized outside of the Internet, and SNL seemed like a good fit for her: they let a large variety of people perform on their stage. Furthermore, Born to Die was released soon after the performance, and usually artists go on TV shows to promote their albums anyway. I don't believe her dad bankrolled her, didn't she live in a trailer park? She was on it because of the hype surrounding video games which started because it was played on radio one and the video went viral. She deserves every bit of success she has. If she didn't have writing and singing talent, I wouldn't have had her on repeat since January this year.
