There are two 'ballads', I air quote ballads because they're more along the lines of Gypsy. There's not really any downer moments on the album.

My favorite song was '911' that was mentioned in the Paper Interview, the verses are super frantic and fast-paced with Bowie like vocals with a lot of Stache like synths, but then she talks about popping her pills in the pre-chorus and the chorus hits. it's really upbeat, classic Gaga chorus, but somehow way calmer than the verses, the synths change entirely (almost sounds like a different song), kinda gave me Electric Chapel chorus vibes. I think it was my favorite song and will def be a fan favorite.

Hope that it's nothing like the katy perry mess though, that got pulled off air.

I think the problem with her 2 more recent lead singles is that the tracks have leave no room to breathe to the listener in a way, that's why they aren't commercially viable. They are too fast-paced and have no breaks between verse-chorus-bridge etc. if you listen to Stupid Love it just goes verse-pre-chorus other pre-chorus chorus really fast, you can't even take in the information and it has no sleek production tricks that define the pace and make you excited for what's coming next if you know what I mean. I feel like PI has the same issue, that's why a lot of people dislike it. They are definitely great workout songs for the same reason that they are not good single choices, too overwhelming, not necessarily noisy imo 

I think we all just gotta realize Gaga isn’t hip anymore  her music doesn’t just go top 10 because she’s “Lady Gaga” like during her first three albums. The only actual way I see her getting top 5 hits now is

A. She gets enough hype from fans and music nerds (like Stupid Love) 

B. She actually goes out of her way to promote the song on a huge scale (Million Reasons, Shallow)

C. She collaborated with someone hip enough to get the younger public to stream (Rain On Me maybe) 

Shell always sell albums because she has a loyal fanbase, but even if she provides a “commercially” perfect single she’s not going to get a giant hit out of it without any of these things. I can tell you right now any song from Joanne that would’ve been the lead with the level of promotion PI got would’ve charted probably the same way.
