That won plenty of accolades and it was a foreign film. We know how much he loves Mexicans. Now he’s showing how well he respects South Koreans. I mean seriously is there any group he hasn’t said anything bad about besides the KKK and his White Nationalist supporters? Same way that comedy, drama musical, etc. All have their own separate categories, but they can also be nominated/win best picture, because that award is genre-less. All of these varieties of film are still eligible for Best Picture. Any film can be nominated and win Best Picture. Many international and several animated films have been nominated for Best Picture. This is the equivalent of winning, say R&B Album and Album of the Year at the Grammys. One is specific to a smaller category, the other a general industry recognition. It’s rare because you’re right they do have specific categories for these outlier types of categories (best documentary, best animated, best foreign), but if the Voting Committee that handles nominations felt strongly enough then it’s possible it could land in Best Picture.
