They give white guys a slap on the wrist and let them go slide free for crimes even worse than this True true but I think in this case it's more that since he got off SO light last time, it gave a ton of bad press to the Cook County State's attorney who is now seeking re-election and it was never going to be an easy election for her. Basically, it really embarrassed the city of Chicago on a national scale as well as the State's Attorney so I imagine some of this is motivated by the desire to save face.
