On Friday, Democracy Now! co-host Nermeen Shaikh sat down for a rare joint interview with the Squad, the group of four freshmen Democratic congresswomen who have taken Capitol Hill by storm: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

Omar and Tlaib are the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Omar is a former refugee from Somalia, and Tlaib is the first female Palestinian-American member of Congress. Ayanna Pressley is the first African-American woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts. Ocasio-Cortez was just 29 years old when she took office last year, making her the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress. Born to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father from the South Bronx, Ocasio-Cortez — or AOC — has emerged as one of the most popular lawmakers in the country.

Last week, Ocasio-Cortez and Pressley boycotted President Trump’s State of the Union address, Tlaib walked out during the speech, and Omar stayed for the speech, saying, “My presence tonight is resistance.” Nermeen Shaikh spoke with the four politicians at an event organized by The Rising Majority at Howard University.

So great to see these powerful, inspirational, and trailblazing women speak out and continue to trigger those who can't stand what the future holds  :applause:

They literally represent the future of America. Not only in how the future of America will look, but in how it how its politics will be as well -- unabashed, unapologetic, refusing to be silenced, and truth telling.

It's quite telling of certain people on this site who smear them, those who clearly can't handle women of color speaking out, refusing to shut up as they're expected, and leading the way to a future and a rising majority in this country.

Keep up the fight and the hard work ladies!

I just finished the entire interview and wow. They truly are inspiring and formidable!

I'm so grateful that they got elected into office and are the force they've become.

The truth-telling and authenticity they bring is refreshing and something American politics needs now more than even in the face of the Trump Administration and a weak, spineless Democratic leadership that bends over backwards to it and the Republican Party.

Imagine AOC as president :flutter:

A dream... literally a dream :flutter:

Bernie is one thing... Maybe will work who knows. I'm not gonna say no. I think depends on how some things are executed, how far he ultimately goes on some stuff etc

Ocasio Cortez? I swear no company would ever invest in the US again. She's even more left than Bernie on Economy
