Populism "a political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups."

Us "far leftists" on GGD have been talking about it for months.

Donald Trump did the exact same thing when he campaigned in 2015-16. He promised people Universal Health Care, that he wouldn't touch social security, that he would shut the revolving doors in Congress and "Drain the Swamp" - he said hed bring the coal miner's jobs back and stop outsourcing by fixing trade, and he would also stop illegal immigration with a border wall.

THIS is an effective campaigning strategy. It is very easy to show that Donald Trump is a liar in this regard, he hasnt done any of this and more.

But it is also a reason why the only way to fight populism is with populism. The Democrats will 100% lose if Donald Trump is able to say "I'm going to lower prescription drug costs!" (what the people want) and point to people like Joe Biden who are funded by private health companies to NOT lower prescription drug costs  Then he can say he is not bought and sold like these other politicians because hes a #Billionaire, and he will truly work for the people's best interests.

Of the candidates who can expose him for his lies, we have - several people who openly accept money from these monied interests (Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar) and one specific person who has rejected it his whole life and strongly and publicly fought against them (Bernie Sanders)

If Donald Trump runs as a populist again and we run an establishment candidate (that includes Bloomberg) We will lose, full stop. Ideally Bernie or Warren would be best, since both are populist-esque but polling shows that Warren's brand of populism (technocracy) is actually very much hated by Independents, while Bernis' (pro worker's rights) is loved, so he is the better choice there.

Also, Trump tried to attack m4a probably because his team is smart and saw that 60% of people in the Iowa caucus still supported the idea, despite their massive ad buys against it.

Yes, 60% of people in the democratic Iowa Caucus supported a single payer health care system.

Our goal has to be to expand the electorate and increase voter turn out in order to win. That doesnt happen with playing it safe. Look at how it worked out for Joe Biden   At least people are genuinely excited by Pete's message, even though I think its mostly phony.

This is why we need to unite together as Democrats! We cannot 4 more years of this orange clown in the White House. 

Look, whether the nominee is Bernie, or Biden, or even someone else, vote blue!  That's the only way we can get him out. Of course, support whoever you want in the primaries, but when it comes November, everyone needs to do their part to go out and vote! At that point, there is no more discussing, "Oh, so-and-so should've gotten the nomination", or "I'm not going to vote for 'x' candidate in the general cause they'll just lose to Trump anyway". Get out of that mindset. 

Seeing a crowd like this supporting such a disgusting and vile president is insulting to democracy itself.

i know what populism is    i was simply pointing out that it was a little bit dismaying to finally see the complete  complicity of all republicans finally come to a resounding public completion--(not just with the usual behind the scenes votes that people don't really hear about, not just with impeachment--it was pretty clear from the beginning that he would be let off--and not just with the general silence regarding trump's antics). now it is something where republicans, as a totally united group, are very proudly and very openly  cheering for bold-faced and unambiguous lies on policy (i particularly bring to mind the protection of SS and medicare, which most, if not all, republicans want to cut). it was a little bit jarring to see the coup de grace like that. that's all i was saying.

and i guess you can make all these assertions about who can win how (i personally don't know if any democrat can win against trump and i don't know whether a more moderate or a more liberal approach would be better--i can only speculate; you could be right, idk). i retain no certainty of what will happen in the general or which strategy will work, both sides have good arguments from where i stand. i didn't even see buttigieg's surge in iowa coming, that for me was a surprise. did you know buttigieg (a moderate) would come in top two?

I mean, no one can really know anything, we can just put forward theories and offer evidence to support them  

I personally did see Buttigieg coming in top two and have said multiple times on here that he could win Iowa - the amount of money and focus he put on this state was so high that if he didn't win or come in top two, his whole campaign was pretty much over  So, I was not surprised to see him sorta claim victory so quickly. He had to  He overperformed the most recent polls mostly because of the realignment process which cant be entirely captured in polls. We went in expecting Warren to be the most favored 2nd choice candidate for Pete/Klobuchar people, but with her and pete back and forth in the polls for 2nd and 3rd, all we had to go on was other trends for 2nd choice and waiting to see how it worked out for everyone - so It was a tossup in my mind who would snag. He could still win, but we dont know.

(That being said, if Bernie won, than Bernie > Pete > Warren > Biden is the order Bernie needed to get the most out of this victory going forward, even though the press is pretty much dead for any of the candidates now)

Those ninety per cent approval rating (over anything) Republicans aren’t budging. Trump knows his base and that’s who this commercial was targeted towards, not the Dems who are out spending hours on a weeknight voting in a state primary race.

I will continue to be ecstatic that 60% of the Iowans who attended this caucus supported single payer and keep advocating to spread it towards other people, and so will Bernie's team
