Quartz 12,366
Isn't it interesting that The Edge of Glory was released when she was on her pinnacle (or edge); and, Marry the Night, a song about owning and accepting your darkness and failures, became her first single to not reach the top ten? In other words, Marry the Night was the start of her steep decline. Do you ever think Gaga listened to Marry the Night privately after her hip broke, and cried? Marry the Night and Born This Way continue to make me tear up to this day especially when I read the lyrics along with her singing. Regardless of what happens next, these two songs alone have saved countless of lives. I wouldn't be the man I am now without this album especially these two songs. I remember when I was all alone and had a massive HIV scare. I was young and couldn't tell anyone; I thought I was going to go out of my mind. Marry the Night literally pulled me back from the brink. I reflected, 'That no matter what happens, I'm going to be OK because I am a warrior.' Do you have your own personal stories of how Gaga's music and art saved you? Be patient for LG6, fellow monsters. I know it will be worth it. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊
Phlop 4,773
Well it came up in my job pandora and people were living for it. Someone asked me what song it was and I said it’s by Gaga, and she said she never heard it before. Perhaps it was released before it’s time, but it’s legit a bop. derpmonster 22,412
I love this song and it has got me through so much. It's not technically true that it was the beginning of her decline. The beginning was Judas but MTN was the first real flop. Her songs have always been prescient and predicted her career in some way. I think it was so ironic that Marry The Night is the last song she performed before she cancelled the Born This Way Ball and the Joanne World Tour. The music video is about being at the rock bottom and winning again. And ultimately it was where her next decline was. I also think there's a reference to Marry The Night in The Queen that people don't often catch. Starry night, come inside me like never before. She has married the night. You can figure out the rest. It's a sexual innuendo. Check out iTunes data & graphs at CHARTPOP.live

I guess in some profound way, to echo Marry the Night's connection to The Queen, she really needed to flop with ARTPOP and embracing her decline to be the actual queen she is now. I swear, her music, if she wanted to, can really speak so much of human suffering and victory. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊
Lord Temptation 11,209
The entire BTW era was the start of her backlash. With BTW song there were the accusations of plagiarism. With Judas the blasphemy controversy. With TEOG there was the cancelled music video.
Head Empty 24,869
Gaga was extremely overexposed after being "on top" for two years straight. The thing about that era was: any song released as first single would go #1 because of the hype, and any fifth single was destined to "flop" due to people just being oversaturated by Gaga content. If MTN had been the first single, it would've been a Gaga classic. Happiness will never last, darkness comes to kick your ass... ᵃˢˢ 🕺

Chickens in Malibu 7,873
Um Marry The Night as a single was released like almost a year after BTW the song. It was the 5th single. It was doomed to flop. Even 1989's fifth single "New Romantics" flopped lol
Celloo Deng 54,470
I wish MTN had been the lead single, for sure the best song on BTW. she/her 👹🖤 | King MJ & Queen Britney 🎶

She will fly like a Challenger (that crashed, what an interesting choice of a metaphor) across the sky, and rise like a phoenix (which she surely did) so you can remind them of the dream she bore.
