LaLa 19,704
No. She just wasn't in a great place physically or mentally, and needed to focus on herself. She said during the recent Oprah interview that for a long time she "didn't feel like she belonged to herself". I think part of her mental health journey has been pulling back from her kinda unhealthy relationship with us, and finding a better balance.

I think part of her mental health journey has been pulling back from her kinda unhealthy relationship with us, and finding a better balance. I've said it before. It's like a lot of her love songs can be interpreted to be about us, her fans. She's been in a Bad Romance with us. And she knew back then Fame ruined people and she wanted all its lovers' revenge. By finally mastering Fame and getting the revenge for all who Fame destroyed: Judy, Silvia, Marilyn, Princess Di. She chased us like Paparazzi and wanted to just dance but we went too far. We took her home instead. We were the monsters in her bed (way too close to her to the point she lost personal space). We ate her heart and then we ate her brain. Even though we were so cruel, she was still in love with us. ARTPOP was supposed to be her redemption where she'd finally break free from the chains and show us the girl behind the aura. Instead, it broke her even more. She thought she could figure it out and make it work. Her guessing game was strong. That's when she realized her love for Fame... it wasn't love. It was a perfect illusion. And Fame gave her a million reasons to walk away but she really just needed one good one to stay and that good one is the impact, the legacy she can leave behind. I love, it, well done! The part about ARTPOP is so true. I've always thought that the core of that album was asking us (and her friends and family and boyfriend), 'will you still love me if you know the real me' - the girl behind the aura. She was grappling with her sexual assault bigtime during this period, and being open about it for the first time with us and everyone, I think that played a big role. So when she showed us that girl behind the aura, and so many fans were like, 'ummm, no thanks, hate it' and ditched her, I think you're exactly right, it broke her even more. So when it came to Joanne, something she knew a lot of fans would also not necessarily want, she was being extra cautious where we were concerned. She doesn't want us to have the power to hurt her so deeply again.

And despite "scaling back" during the beginning of that era, she realized quickly she still loved it and craved it with the SB success, Coachella, JWT, everything that followed. She just wants to establish a relationship with Fame and her fans on her terms now. In a way that's healthy for her. And it's difficult. She hasn't mastered it yet. It's not close to done.
