Unless you're meaning Meghan as an American citizen. Either way, your reaction to this shows you have very little understanding of our monarchy. I've just found out they've made a site called sussexroyal.com (registered in March 2019, so it was planned for some time) and they've slapped the name on items from t-shirts, pencils, socks, baseball caps, etc. They're looking to profit off their royal titles despite retiring from public duty. What they're doing is actually against the rules. You can't use royal titles for personal gain. I thought someone like you would be appalled with this greedy, money-grabbing behaviour, not applauding it. It's amazing how a mixed race woman being involved results in blind support without looking at what she's actually doing. Just now, LateToCult said: Ma’am, it’s not that deep. If they truly don't f**k with them, then why do they still want to be a part of them by profiting off their royal titles and taxpayer money and having "a progressive role WITHIN the institution." Moving to Canada is likely just a ruse to make them look less bad because it's not a "showbiz" place, is cold in the winter and is a Commonwealth territory. But we all know Meghan's real sights are on LA, land of celebrity worship and year-round sunshine. Canada's just to help them get to where they really want. Or should I say, what she wants. It's clear she's calling all the shots. Harry was never about celebrity, branding and branching out on your own before she came along. She's finally successfully alienated him from his family. From refusing the Queen's invitation to Balmoral and Christmas at the palace, causing a rift between him and William, taking occasional several week long vacations from public duty...it was all to pull him away from his family and those he'd been close to for years. Its clear from Meghan's slow but steady pushing of herself into non-royal things like starting a clothing line and editing Vogue that she's been planning this for months, possibly since the beginning: marry him, stick it out for about a year and then make plans to break away and cash in on the newfound fame that has come with marrying into royalty. Social climbing doesn't even begin to cover it. What's sad is that a child is involved in all of this. I hope he can have as grounded a life as possible given the circumstances. The British and Canadian taxpayers better not spend a penny on them but we are, at least initially. This is a transitionary period and they're still planning on having private security which definitely comes from our money. They have to make up their minds which way they want to go - 100% royals with all the trappings that come with that or 100% independent, private citizens and all the trappings that come with that. NO IN BETWEEN. The Queen should strip them of their royal titles immediately for the massive disrespect they've shown the crown by not telling anyone and being ungrateful for everything they received. Let's see how long Meghan sticks around if Harry's no longer a royal. Then we'll see how genuine she truly was. I'm not a royalist, not by any stretch, but to see what the Queen has had to endure in the last few years with her husband being in ill health, Andrew's scandal and now this pair going behind her back and disgracing the family with no regard for anyone has given me a newfound respect for her and I hope she can recover from all this and cut off anyone who's bringing the royals down. Cut down the royal house and put William and Kate at the forefront. The Queen doesn't need any more nonsense at her age. Oh, and they announced all this on this on the evening before Kate's birthday. Because having the spotlight on you is all the more delicious when it's taken off someone else. She doesn't need to be made out to be a villain, she is one. She hustled her way into the royal family and alienated her husband from everyone he loved. That doesn't even touch on all the friends she ditched over the years when they were no longer of use to her and the ex husband who she mailed her wedding ring to as a way of announcing she wanted a divorce. And the ill father who loved her and provided for her who she cast adrift and acts like he doesn't exist. And the the royals gave her everything - a mini mansion, a multi-million pound wedding, royal protection, royal budget, top billing for royal duties and appearances. They have given in to her every whim including her baby shower in New York, the low-key announcement of Archie, her decision to edit Vogue, her right to travel to America whenever she liked to watch Serena play tennis. She was given amazingly free rein for a non-royal American who'd been in the family for all of 2 minutes. If anything, I'm surprised they supported her as much as they did. She was the one who never supported them, snubbing royal engagements that weren't "fun" while on maternity leave (she couldn't attend a state dinner but could turn up to the Lion King premiere, which Harry had to miss a memorial service for), turning down the Queen's invitations with excuses like "Archie's too young to fly" (even though she took him abroad and yet he couldn't go on a mere flight further north in the UK?) and trying to further her own interests by engaging in non-royal activities meant for personal gain. She has never given any indication that she truly wanted to be a full-time member of their family and the fact she couldn't even try for a full 2 years since marrying Harry tells you everything. It's not about being normal and down to earth, it about serving your duty to the crown and respecting the people who pay your lifestyle. Most royals know they wouldn't adapt to normal civilian life so they stay royal, suck it up and deal with all the duty that comes with that, which is admirable. This isn't an institution that you enter without doing your research. Meghan was fast-tracked in, wasn't given time to adapt and it was clear that this wasn't what she wanted so she had to bail. That's not being down to earth, that's just not trying. You have to realise that there's no abdication here, they're keeping their royal titles, funds and taxpayer-funded security. They're not giving it all up and becoming private citizens who don't want to be reported on. They're wanting to be celebrities without the restrictions of royal life. That's the opposite of being down to earth, it's being fame seeking. Not to mention, having your cake and eating it. They have supported them enormously, read the reply I made to the user two replies up from this one. Are you kidding? America is all about black and white, it sometimes seems like all they go on about. Regardless of what we're told to believe, the UK as a whole never held Meghan's race against her, all the criticisms levelled at her never had anything to do with race and could have been applied to anyone. And they're very good reasons too. But I've noticed that Americans never seem to understand why we take such a dislike to her because they've never had a royal family and don't get what it stands for. Maybe if your money was going towards this woman and her lavish lifestyle of designer clothes she only wears once and private jets, you'd be a bit put out too. That's an awful, ageist thing to say about the Queen. What's she ever done to warrant that? We're in the present, not the past. They can't help what they were born into. I respect the ones who actually have jobs and give back. Not all of them have children with titles who are given taxpayer money either. Love them or hate them, they're a strong piece of Britain's identity and a huge draw for our economy. They pull in millions every year from tourism. Our culture would change in next level ways if they were dismantled as their influence is felt throughout so much of our lives, even if we're not royalists. Don't you not care about a country losing part of their culture and heritage?

Whispering 18,865
Good for them! The press is out of control and invasive beyond any level of normalcy. This decision gives them a chance to raise their children, and live a life, away from the constant pressure and scrutiny.

They should have consulted the Queen and the rest of the family to straighten it all out and make sure it was all above board, financially, legally, formally. But no, they just took off without warning, leaving everyone in the lurch. And they announced it on the eve of Kate's birthday, meaning that the next day, when she should have been enjoying the celebrations at Kensingston Palace, it was a sombre occasion and everyone was talking about someone other than her. We're also annoyed that they registered a website called sussexroyal.com that is going to flog their titles on trademarked items, meaning they are flouting protocol by attempting to profit off their titles. They are also still due to receive taxpayer money, at least for the foreseeable future, even though they won't be carrying out the same amount of duties or even be living in the UK full time. You'll notice in their statement that there's no actual explicit wording of abdication or in any way that they are giving up being royal. They say they are still aiming to step down from "senior royal duties" (not all royal duties, just senior ones) and that they'll still have a "progressive role within the institution" (meaning they are still operating within the Firm, just on their own terms). Basically, they're still wanting to be royal, with all the fancy stuff that goes with it, like the fame and the titles and the importance and the taxpayer funded lifestyle but don't actually want to do much work or any of the boring stuff that comes with that. This has never been done before. You're either in or you're out. You're either royal or you're not, there should be no half measures. Those who wanted them to give it up wanted them to do just that - give it all up 100% - no titles, no public funding, living as citizens just like the rest of us. If they did that, there would be no complaints, but no, they're too accustomed to luxury living and fame and want to still retain it as much as they can without paying for it themselves or earning it. We don't want to pay for essentially private citizens who don't serve or give back to our country anymore and don't even live here all the time. Wouldn't you be mad if members of the Swedish royal family did that? 19 hours ago, ZiggyZiggs said: It would be better if you could respond with words. You're not taking into account the way they've done it, why they've done it, what they're doing now they've left. Because that stuff is seriously shady and you're ignoring it all. People just assume the monarchy is a toxic environment but they've never lived in it, so how would they know? The royals were extremely accommodating, you're acting as if they were being stifled, quite the opposite. I'm bringing up race because I've noticed that Meghan being mixed race is the #1 reason why people seem to show her support. If she were white, she wouldn't be afforded the same benefit of the doubt. Race is an easy excuse for why people don't like you instead of actually examining the criticism and seeing if it's warranted. Everyone can do bad things regardless of what race they are and they need to be called out on it. If she were white, there would be very little in the way of any sort of defence for her because you can't use your race as a reason for why people don't like you when you're white. We just have to suck up criticism and believe we must be the ones with the problem. I just want to see everyone be expected to be self-reflective like that regardless of their race. Newsflash: Harry is white and I'm glad both of them are leaving that cesspool of toxicity. UK media were just stating the facts - they announced how much her clothes were costing, how many breaks they were taking, whenever protocol was breached, how she ghosted her dad and everyone who she'd ever befriended, her past as little more than "hot girl" tv roles. When you're royal, your life will be laid out for all to see and if you're unsuitable, well, it's going to show up and that's why only those with squeaky clean pasts should marry into it. Kate dealt with criticism too and she just got on with it. Of course it wasn't as "toxic" for her because she lived a much more conservative life than Meghan, so there's no dirt to dig up on her. If you're not doing bad things, obviously, there will be no bad things to report on. And how do you know they're not more upset about Andrew? They're not unfeeling reptilians, of course they know what's the bigger scandal here. The only reason they've kept quiet is because that's the way that monarchy operates - they never tell us their political or personal positions on things: never complain, never explain. For example, I'm sure the Queen is hopping mad about the stunt Meghan and Harry have just pulled but do you think she's going to make a Twitter statement filled with expletives? No, because the royals don't act like that. Naturally, they'll keep their true feelings about Andrew quiet too. But they've made sure he's stepped back from royal life and haven't publicly defended him or associated with him since. That alone should speak volumes. Her race is very relevant depending on who you speak to. It usually is the factor around which all the criticism towards her revolves as if that's the only reason anyone could dislike her. There are some who believe race is always relevant, regardless of location, time period, culture, etc. Harry, despite being white, gets almost as much, if not more criticism than her because he's the one that should know better about what it means to act royal and should have made sure his wife was ready for this before he married her. There would be a lot more stumbling blocks with Kate if she'd married William after a mere 2 years of dating. Sure, waiting 8 years to get married is a bit much but to date, get engaged and married all within the space of 2 years is a bit too whirlwind.
