Well I get that, like it almost seems bandwagon-y at times or that certain celebs want some attention... and yeah the same message can get tedious time and time again. But if you are genuine and want to raise a political point because its true to your heart, I don't think those people should shut up. If someone has something to say about a current political situation, they shouldn't be shouted down upon or told to "shut up" End Racism Now

About your second paragraph, I would agree if it wasnt the exact same argument climate denialists use against her, that she is too young and uneducated to know what shes talking about. The joke about school had nothing to do with Greta's intelligence or education whatsoever. She was used as a punchline to insult their intelligence. I guess you can defend it claiming to be anti-PC or something, but some parts where just very unnecessarily mean, like the Greta Thunberg joke. It served no purpose except for saying that she isn't that qualified to do what she's doing, which I think is the same as saying only scientists can campaign on climate change-related issures, when in reality is a problem that affects us all. Uh what? You literally misunderstood the joke. He's saying she's more educated than everyone in the room, since the joke is that a lot of actors are dropouts / have no degrees. The joke is "hey this 15-year-old is smarter than all of you". At least how I took it...especially since he then railed on them for being all talk. I took it as him saying "this little girl does more than you / is smarter."

Remember that we live in a world full of Snowflakes (which isn't a word I like to use btw). Can you imagine the collective outrage if he was an "all in, or nothing" kind of guy. He had to be clever about it and play his cards right. You never know he might get invited back for a 6th time (not likely ) and make that the time he goes too far with what he says. Like you have a huge platform and someone like him who is in the public eye has a lot of influence. I don't believe you should just shut up about what you believe in.... imagine if Lady Gaga never spoke her mind? How many of you would still be here had Lady Gaga not done what she did for the LGBT community? In a world where we have the President of the US wanting to start a war with another country, now is not the time to "shut up". Now is the time to voice your opinion, especially if you have the platform they have. Or maybe, just maybe, everything on TV lately has been so extremely oversaturated with politics that people actually want to watch something that doesn't remind them of the world's current ѕhitty state and have a good laugh without being preached at? Just a different perspective

Rich, privileged people that do basically nothing to change ****, but like to pretend they're activists for something. I completely agree with that point but Ricky Gervais isn’t any better and that’s why I find his whole speech pointless and a cringe attempt at being self aware. At the end of the day he’s still hosting a Hollywood circlejerk and buying into the hypocrisy and charade of it all. That’s why it’s funny to me that people are giving him some pat on the back for staying the obvious in the form of admittedly funny jokes.

He's a comedian after all, not some sort of political hero, I don't think anyone is treating him like that. But you have to admit that that sort of comment is not very common in these events so it was pretty funny seeing how everyone in the room reacted. Edonis 28,950
Not all of y'all using Trumpian "I don't wanna hear politics on my moving picture box!1!1!1" arguments to make Gervais' hosting gig seem spectacular. Anyways, it's the same type of branded humor he usually does. Nothing exciting or out of the ordinary from the self-proclaimed animal activist. Smother Em Eh 7,135
I love this tbh. We don’t always need to be reminded of the chaos that’s going on around the world and constant rants about the President. That’s why people like watching the award shows, so you don’t have to hear about how sh*tty the world is. It’s a way of escapism. And if you don’t do anything to change what’s going on, then ranting and raving about it is pointless. Anyways, he made the show. I’d love for him to host it every year haha. Glamourpuss 29,062
I just found out that he said this as his last joke... Returning to the stage after a lengthy absence, Gervais said: “Our next presenter starred in Netflix’s Bird Box, a movie where people survive by acting like they don’t see a thing – sort of like working for Harvey Weinstein.”
