American Song Contest is one step closer, tentatively planned for 2021

USA is one step closer of getting their own version of the Eurovision Song Contest. Melodifestivalen, the Swedish national selection for Eurovision Song Contest, has presented some new information:

The plans for realising the American Song Contest were announced during the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. Since then, a Swedish team with the Melodifestivalen Senior Producer Christer Björkman has been travelling back and forth across the Atlantic.
So far, it has been an open matter whether the respective states, cities or even singular singers are meant to enter songs. But in recent development, a format has been set for the Contest, Christer says in the new Mellopodden podcast – and hints that it might be the states competing.

”Something like that, yes. What is interesting is that the different states generally have a rather distinct musical identity, and the adjacent states as well. This will almost automatically give us a distribution of genres.”

The contest is envisioned to include a mix of fresh shooting stars and established singers.
In the upcoming spring, the American Song Contest format will be pitched to US broadcasters.

”They are extremely interested in this. Next summer, we should know if this will happen, and how,” Christer Björkman says.

After having been the Contest Producer for the Eurovision Song Contest in four consecutive years, Björkman will not return to the role in Rotterdam. His focus will be overseas.

The American Song Contest is tentatively planned to have its inaugural contest in 2021.

An Asian version of the contest has been in talks for years, but keeps getting postponed. Hopefully this one will do better.

At ESC performs low-key known artists, so I hope at ASC there won't be global known singers participating in contest (they can perform as guests or something), cause it would become like a music award ceremony without awards. I mean no big stars who almost everyone heard about, for example EMM, AJ Mitchell or Krewella could participate, cause I bet you never heard about.
