I don't understand why some of ya'll don't think Gaga deserved the award in 2015.  She snatched the GP's heart with her Sound of Music tribute, and her successful transition from being a popstar to a legit Golden Globes best actress awardee. 2015 was a remarkable turning point in her career. Til It Happens to You is also a powerful song that sheds light on sexual abuse and the traumas it leaves on its victims. It was there before the #MeToo movement existed. 2015 was a great year for Gaga.

They are talking about the award Woman of the Year in this decade and it doesn't make sense that Beyoncé and Rihanna didn't get one but Selena, Madonna, P!nk did like come on...  and don't talk about Bey got it in 2009 (as if you are making any good point when we are talking about this decade!) when Taylor is there twice!

No doubt there are some questionable choices. I know for a fact Fergie did nothing in 2010 from a solo perspective, so that one's totally bizarre. And how on earth did Selena win in 2017 despite only putting out 2 flop singles that year that never made it onto an actual album and not touring or being in a hit movie? It's like they just wanted someone to win who never had before.

But that doesn't mean it comes down to racism. There is such a thing as being in second place. I've experienced it so many times, it's a killer, it's worse than last place. But it's life. It's not a Grammy we're talking about, it's just a meaningless BB award that nobody outside mega pop stans care about. If you're all so up in arms about it being racist, then how come Adele, a white woman who's sold more albums than any other of these women over the entire decade with just 2 albums and has won AOTY twice, has never won it? It's because it's an American focused award, they just want to give it to Americans. Just like the Grammys, that's where the biggest piece of bias is, not race. And Beyonce already won it before. Is this really an award you need twice? Come on.

Black women have been praised more than I've ever seen in the last few years, including getting hits, awards and breaking records. I don't get how, when black women are at the peak of critical, commercial and cultural relevancy are people now the most vocal they've ever been about them not getting the success and praise they deserve.

Pink's Truth About Love album sold 7 million worldwide that year, she had a massive #1 hit with Just Give Me A Reason plus several top tens and had a $184 million grossing 142 date world tour. She was a very obvious choice. And as for Madonna...I strongly believe this award is sometimes based on legend status and milestones. Madonna had just released her 13th studio album and had reached her 30th anniversary in the industry. Maybe BB felt that she was going to retire soon or take a long break until her next album (which she did) and thought if she didn't win it this year, she'd never get a credible chance again and would have to wait another 20 years until her 50th anniversary to win again and who's to say she'd even still be around as we'd lost so many legends a short while before? As she said in her speech, David Bowie and Prince had just died. Maybe BB thought they'd better award a legend while she was still here to receive it?

No one's pretending that black women aren't represented in the music industry, they're simply pointing out that time and time again said women get snubbed in favor of their white peers for no apparent reason (like Madonna in 2016, I mean, really?). The criteria for Woman of the Year seems to change every time so it's completely understandable that people can't fully grasp what qualifies one woman over the other and why so many successful black women were paid dust.

You would have realized that if you "fact checked" by taking 2 minutes to read the tweets in question with an open mind.

If you read my above comments, it may make more sense. I think a lot of these women were simply second choice, we never see the shortlist. The fact that Adele, most successful female out of all of them, has never won despite being white should tell you it doesn't come down to racism. And you do realise that talented white women lose out to untalented white women and men all the time too, don't you? Plenty of white artists have been paid dust over the last few years as urban music has come back, just like so many black artists careers depleted or ended in 2008 when pop and dance became big. It all comes around and it'll come back again.

There honestly needs to be more money being invested into pushing younger black artists, women especially in the mainstream music world. We need more hits that are pushed by labels for Ella Mai & Normani so we get used to them as solo artists.
