It was already mainstream when Sex Pistol got famous in the late 70s-early 80s, all the high fashion designer started to emulate punk vibes into their clothes. Gaga just another one who swore by it.

It is in the choice of words. 

If the user said that Gaga brought back attention to this style, I would agree. But since they uses different words, makes it seems like Gaga is a pioneer which I kindly tried to correct.

Gaga started the hype and brought EDM to pop music, but Britney and Rihanna were the first to bring full EDM  drops and dubstep to mainstream radio. Hold It Against Me was the first ever dubstep drop on Mainstream radio and of course, Calvin and Rihanna had We Found Love, which had the longest build up and full EDM drop. 

 

**2011 was really one of the best years for pop music.

Gaga didn’t bring that stuff back. Gothic clothing styles were popular in the early-mid ‘00s amongst teenagers back when Hot Topic was a “goth” store. Billie Eilish kind of reminds me of that look actually.

Exactly. Boys Noize and David Guetta released influential albums in 2007 and listening to them I can definitely see they helped pave the way for the EDM of the early 2010’s. Let’s also not forget Deadmau5 with Random Album Title in 2008.

I would say that Gaga helped re-introduce it as a popular genre, the way had already been paved by other artists in the previous decades.

Madonna was one of the first major artists to introduce electronic dance music into the heavy mainstream rotation and since then it has been making a comeback every now and then.
