Outside of awards season, the Met Gala, and the launch of Haus Labs, 2019 was clearly intended to be a quiet year for Gaga in the grand scheme of things. It’s like 1991 for Madonna. Often overlooked and largely forgotten. Sure, it's been a quiet year for her in terms of new music, but may I remind you of some of her highlights this past year: - "Shallow" becoming the most award-winning song ev-ah - Winning a f*cking Oscar and having her performance of "Shallow" at the Oscars become the most talked-about moment from the ceremony, earning two standing ovations - Collecting three more Grammys, including for "Joanne" (piano version) - Winning the Critics Choice Award for Best Actress (tie) for her very first lead acting role in a film - Launching not one, but two highly acclaimed, nearly sold-out Vegas residencies (technically Enigma launched in 2018, but at the tail end) - Launching her own beauty line which catapulted to #1 on Amazon in its respective categories immediately - Helping to organize the Met Gala and then stealing the show with a ten-minute performance piece on the pink carpet without uttering a single word - Having the ASIB soundtrack stay on the charts for a full year Notice I didn't even list all of the individual awards she won for "Shallow" or all of her acting noms. If this is a "quiet" year for her, then the Oxford English Dictionary needs to update its definition of the word. We may not have a new album or a new single, but I'd say she's had one hell of a year, and we still have two months left. She's been extremely busy, just perhaps not in ways that are always visible, and it looks like she's poised to give us new music, possibly a new single before the end of the year. I mean, sure I guess. Yes, those achievements are admirable, but they’re passive ones. Almost all of those were either low-key accomplishments or appealed to an older audience (awards shows, Met Gala, Shallow performance). The only major thing she has done that actually appealed to young people and made them aware of her presence/existence was Haus Labs, and that appealed to a niche community. What I mean is that Gaga isn’t out and about as she used to be. 2019 is by far her most isolated year ever, and this is really the first year where she would go months without being seen in public or posting on social media. Even in 2018 she was seen in public far more often, and her public appearances were of a much higher profile than that of what we’ve seen in 2019. This is the most under-the-radar she has ever been in her career, just very very hidden. It doesn’t matter what she’s doing behind the scenes, this is just a quiet year for her public career. Madonna was very much in the same position back in 1991. When people look back at Gaga’s career 20 to 30 years from now, 2019 will be a year that will most likely be completely skipped over or barely acknowledged compared to the rest of her career (especially in the 2010’s). It’s the same with how nobody acknowledges 1991 when discussing Madonna’s career.
