Earlier Jackson was to end his life by diving into water and shallow was written in narrative to this story.

Later on Gaga and others liked shallow too much that they wanted it to be main song of the movie and important pillar to Ally and Jackson's relationship.

Read the lyrics with context to Jackson diving deep into water, in shallow deep.

I'm off the deep end

Watch as I dive in

I'll never meet the ground

Crash through the surface

Where they can't hurt us

We're far from the shallow now

In the sha-ha-sha-ha-low

In the she-ha-sha-la-la-la-low

In the she-ha-sha-ha-low

We're far from the shallow now.

omg the song will now seem MUCH more darker to me when I listen to it

That's Gossip

It's about a pop star who had these fans who were really shallow, and she kept trying to make them happy but nothing was ever enough.

One day, she met a handsome movie star and ditched those loser fans.

So now, she's far from the shallow.

"In the sha-ha shaalloow", as in, "In the shallow was where they hurt us", but  we're far from that place now. If that makes sense :laughga:

It's poetry. It doesn't have to mean anything. What's important is the emotion it makes you feel. What it makes you picture. I can't tell either what it means, but I know what it makes me feel.

I understand it as a metaphor for the relationship of Ally and Jack. At first, their relationship was pretty much shallow as they knew each other only for hours. But as the story continues, both Ally and Jack commit to their relationship, thus diving into this relationship, where nothing is shallow anymore and they discover new things all time on the partner ( I'll never meet the ground - there will never be a point they know everything about each other ).

And the second part with Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us refers to - imo - the scene in the supermarket at the beginning where Ally is annoyed that the cashier took a photo of Jack without permission, thus - to get back to their actual relationship - she wants to keep that to themselves and not be shared with others.

Another thought about that lyric that came to my mind as I wrote that last paragraph is, that they refers to the drugs and alcohol Jack consumes. So Ally thinks/hopes these bad things won't hurt him anymore when she's with him.

Ew, David!

Shallow was originally planned to be the final song and it's about suicide.

But it was skipped when she wrote I'll never love again so the song was a duet.

I think it's Mark itself who said it was planned to be the final song and the theme of the song makes sens.

The song could be literally about diving, but since the movie didn't have any scenes that were literal to go along with this, I thought the song was entirely about the difference between Ally and her career vs the more intimate things she has with Jack.

Like her career is about her look and a few pop songs that are superficial. But her relationship with Jack is where she can divulge deeper feelings and thoughts.

So she is in the shallow for her career and the GP and in the deep with Jack.

Anyway, whatever, the song is beautiful whatever it really means.

I briefly looked for the other versions of the movie awhile ago, but they weren't on the major streaming platforms. So, I've never seen the older versions of the movie. (don't think that I want to now)
