My mother language is spanish so I don't know... we have to call 'him' 'them' like I love Sam Smith they are good singers?

I was just looking this up and there's a pronoun called "elle" or "élle". But I couldn't find much else...

Don’t forget Intersex people, too!

Heteronormativity and Cisnormative values have put Intersex people under damaging surgeries!

Thank you for correcting me... Intersex is the reason I added the qualifier 'usually', but I should have been more thorough! No one deserves to be or feel alienated based on their gender, sexual orientation, or, in this case, biological sex!

People making fun of this should be ashamed of themselves.

Your queen supports gender nonbinary people and their pronouns and mentions it at every show.

Oh lol it was more happy in tone. I’m sorry if it read condescendingly.

They is plural it makes no sense

another word needs to be come up with for this

and it cant be “IT” as that sounds like ur refering to a useless object

Singular "they" has been in use for a long time. They as a pronoun has started catching on, it's not a big deal. Language evolves.

And for some grammatical issues people are confused about, you would say things like "they are a singer" - not "they are singers" for example. They is simply substituted in situ for a singular pronoun but we change the "be" verb as well from "is" to "are". Rest remains singular.

It's like when you're talking about someone whose gender you don't know. You may say something like "when you love someone, they come around" or "to each their own" (each signifies a singular as part of a collection, thus making "they" singular in this case).

It does but so does "you"

it does? :selena: 'you ate my sandwich' i can't think of 'you' being multiple people.. You, yourself.. yours..  2 people would be 'you two' or in slang 'Yous' which is the only example i can think of :air:

I might be completely ignorant but 'they' i don't get.. It's completely undescriptive and doesn't seem different to me then someone calling me 'it'

I don't understand the reaction of some of you here.

If an old granny says "I don't understand why people should be so loud about them being gay/lesbian. Can't they be quiet about it cause it's private information?" or "I don't understand this homosexual lifestyle", you would feel very hurt by those comments. :excuseu:

Now you're the old granny to Sam. Remember, we are still fighting for our LGBT+ rights for EVERYONE and it wasn't that long ago that the general thought was that being gay was something people did "for attention" or because they're "confused".

SMH. Spreading my love to Sam and everyone on the gender spectrum, including my non-binary friends

I’m glad that there is a genderless way of referring to a person in my mother tongue. English can’t relate

I'm curious as to what it is. I hope you don't mind me asking, cause I don't know which language you speak (and I think you mentioned you're from India, and India has a lot of official languages). :D

This raises questions regards how Sam is awarded in the future.

Are they eligible for 'Best Male' categories? And if not, where do they fit in?

I guess they'd just be removed from the gendered categories, altogether.

But if that is the case, I am surprised their record label have let them  be so public with this... since it'll impact their 'critical' success in the industry.

Just a thought!

The Grammy's  already removed gendered categories, combining, for example, male and female pop vocal performance into Best Pop Solo Performance. It would only be other awards where this may present an issue. The Oscar committee set a precedent a few years back that gender fluid actor Kelly Mantle could be eligible for both actor and actress categories. Perhaps other major awards will follow suit.

It doesn't matter if people understand why Sam wants to use the pronouns "they" and "them." It doesn't matter if we agree. They asked us to use these pronouns to refer to them – what does it hurt to respect their wishes? They already acknowledged that people might slip up; all they asked us to do was try. What does it hurt to try? Why intentionally disrespect or hurt someone?

Presumably everyone on this site is a Gaga fan, and she herself has asked us to become more aware of asking for and respecting people's preferred pronouns. Maybe to some people, this seems silly and unnecessary, but to others, it's crucial to their identity and mental well-being. I'm sure it wasn't easy for Sam to post this publicly, and a lot of people are going to mock them as it is. Why not show them love and support instead?

Singular "they" is actually not that uncommon. If you were referring to a "somebody," a singular unspecified person, you would refer to them as "they," for example: "somebody has yet to buy their copy of 2019 AOTY - Norman ****ing Rockwell"

People are creating a problem in this out of sheer lack of respect for Sam's choice, you don't even have to learn a new word, just refer to them as "they."

So I guess no more "Best Male Artist" awards for him? I mean them, now? :teehee:

Good! Gaga can now secure the win in that category! source.gif:ally:

That's really brave, I'm shook to the moon and back :udidnt:

Good for them. And it's weird because in Spanish we don't have official gender neutral pronouns. Guess we'll have to use adapt our language.

I was trying to figure who were "Them"200.gif

Good for Sam! :applause: I'm glad that they're able to come forth like this and live their life the way they see fit. I respect them so much more after this.

As for GGD...color me surprised that this is their reaction. The same hateful people being hateful to others? Groundbreaking.
