Sam Smith annoys me, they’re so try hard with everything and they’re just a basic gay. Like not out of the ordinary whatsoever.

Who are you to tell them who they are? Log off.

Can they just accept that they are a male, the entire world is used to using the pronoun He for them , get over it and be their non binary self no matter what pronoun is used. Geez, why are pronouns so important?! If you get triggered by a pronoun which isn't used to deliberately offend you, then you need to work on your triggers and not on other people's choice of words. I find it really egocentric to ask the entire world to change their ways only so you can feel comfortable.

Not my personal opinion on the matter but a general observation I’ve noticed is that people find self applied labels  “non-binary” and “them” pretentious and a example of privilege.

I'm with some other "entitled idiots" here and I just don't get what's the point of being non-binary. I've tried to educate myself on the subject, I've read many people who identify as non-binary, but I still fail to see the point of it. In my current opinion it just reinforces stereotypes between genders. The way I see it, "he" /"she" is merely used to know if you refer to a male or a female, no social constructs associated with it. To me it just seems so much easier to just say "hey, he can do what he wants, she can do what she wants, don't let society put them in a box, let's all be in one giant box and let's have fun" then say "hey, let's keep him in a box, keep her in another box, and let's make a third box for them where they'll be free".

Battle 4 Ur Life

he should return his male oscars then. he is disclassified.

lmao just kidding. :ladyhaha:

cool but it’s nice he noted how privileged he is to be able to have people near him to embrace this. it truly doesn’t work outside of some sorta social bubble.

but yeah it’s a start and therefore it’s cool. good for him.

Put aside the non-binary gender here, how is "them" gonna be used? It's gonna be hell with not native English speakers.

- Have you listen to their new song?

- Who? The Chainsmokers?

- No! Sam Smith!

- What? There are 2 of him?

something like this...

Aw this makes me so happy for them. :kara:

As a feminine gay male who has struggled with identity, I definitely understand the journey. Let's embrace this and support them.

Head Empty

I find the whole discussion about non-binary pronouns to be confusing and difficult to sympathize with. Words can be powerful, but as an outsider this feels convoluted.

I really try to empathize with people like Sam and I certainly wouldn't tell anyone that they can't be who they want to be, but I just can't wrap my head around it (yet).

The prejudice from a lot of people on this site is REAL. Like what is wrong with some of you people? You demand to be respected and seen as being gay or beisexual or queer, but turn around and do to others exactly what you don't want done to you as someone who's gay?? Absolute hypocrisy.

It's one thing to question whether the pronoun preference thing is the best way to fight against discrimination and prejudice, but to outright mock, laugh at and disrespect someone for communicating how they want to be addressed is unacceptable ESPECIALLY being LGBTQ and Lady Gaga fans. That's outright against everything Gaga stands for, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Like is it really so difficult or such a big deal to refer to someone how they would like to be?? No.

My bet is most of you that way are entitled, cis white gays. Well, your privilege is showing and it ain't cute.

Learn some motherfvcking respect.

It doesn’t make sense, I’m sorry.

I understand being a LGBT individual but beyond that, theres nothing else.

How can Sam Smith identify as “they” yet be gay. That doesn’t make sense to me.

To be gay, you have to be a male that’s into males, so then what does Sam Smith identify as? As another previous user mentioned, how will they compete at awards shows? what about their kids, are they gonna be boys or girls or also theys?

There's a difference between your gender identity and your sexual orientation. They're not the same thing and you seem to be conflating them.

Gender identity is how you feel or choose to identity as (man, woman, non-binary), sexual orientation is who you're into and are attracted to.

Sex is something separate from gender in that it's something you're assigned depending on what genetalia you're born with. Just because you're born male though doesn't mean you'll feel or necessarily identify as a man, which is the whole point of what Trans or non-binary is.

Bottom line is this stuff isn't so simple as many of you think. It's much more complex than that. That's the point of it really is to show how this isn't all black and white.

Also, as to if they're gay or not, this really isn't up to you. They get to make that decisions for themself. People should stop trying to label others.

That said, you could refer to Sam as simply queer. The word "queer" is an umbrella term that can encompass all people who aren't straight and/or cisgender.
