“Dark Pop” is not an actual genre

I was 13 yo edgy little monster while back ago and I'm offended by this. Gaga supported us when we needed her and told us that we have to love each other and support one another, but once you're out of your teenage phase, those little monsters are becoming edgy for you and are stanning nonexisting music genre? confusing.

Also I would say that a lot of what a genre is narrows to presentation. Take Bad Romance for example, strip it of its actual instrumentation and get Dolly Parton to record it with acoustic guitar and strings the result would be a song people would recognize as folk.

There are many artists that combine catchy songs with darker elements and is somehow part of their identity, from Gaga and Lana to The Weeknd. Why is wrong for them to be labeled under this genre?

It's like this thing with metal, they've got like one subgender for each band like "speedtrashdoommetalsynphonic". Why don't we have the same ?

Its a more like  subgenre or a wave that mixes synth pop with dark lyrics, concepts or sound. Natalia Kills was labeled as a Dark pop artist.

 Dark sound and lyrics:

Her album perfectionist has that vibe.

Another example, lyrics are not that dark but the sound and the visuals are creepy.

Then there's another genre called Witch House but it's not pop. It's electronic music distorted with a dark aura and dark lyrics and black magic aesthetic.

Many artits who were in that dark pop wave took elements form Witch House like Charli XCX or Grimes

 

K-POP is not a genre itself either , it's electronic music mixed with rap, pop and r&b. But there's a whole subculture around korean pop music with a determined aesthetic and concept.

I'm shook. I never saw that term ever before in music documentations like never has an artist like Bowie coined it or what.. it's true they talked about incorporating pop art... but nver said 'ARTPOP' (or else I missed that).

Because Gagita's music is not Art pop. The musical genre "Art pop" and Gaga's ARTPOP concept are two different things.

This is it. When Schubert wrote Erlkönig it didn’t suddenly become Dark Classical, it was still Classical with a dark theme.

I didn’t know this thread blew up lmao I’m shoock, I’m only replying to the comments that makes sense so, yeah Dark Wave is a genre but not like Bloody Mary or Heavy Metal Lover. It’s a whole different style of music.

It is a genre, or rather, a sub genre. Just because you don't know doesn't mean it doesn't valid. It doesn't work that way.
