SKANK 14,288
He didn't wake up one day hating himself, and decide that he would spend his life "curing" other men who share his "affliction." He was taught to fear himself by a homophobic culture. He is a victim. The men he tried to "cure" are victims. This is a sad and common story. I'm sure he feels like he has a lot to atone for, after spreading his pain around. I wish him well.
Tom Nook 37,820
“Conversion therapy is not just a lie, but it’s very harmful,” said McKrae Game, a South Carolinian who founded one of the nation's biggest ex-gay ministries. The Post and Courier reports Hope for Wholeness founder McKrae Game came out of the closet this summer, nearly two years after he was fired from the faith-based conversion therapy program. He's now trying to come to terms with the harm he inflicted when he was advocating for religious efforts to change a person's sexuality. For two decades, he led Hope for Wholeness, a faith-based conversion therapy program in South Carolina’s Upstate. Conversion therapy is a discredited practice intended to suppress or eradicate a person’s LGBTQ identity through counseling or ministry. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1049146?__twitter_impression=true https://www.postandcourier.com/news/conversion-therapy-leader-for-decades-mckrae-game-disavows-movement-he/article_fb56dcfc-c384-11e9-970d-bb9a2a8656c5.html Uh Red Wine... YaaaasGaga 6,119
As much as I first want to laugh and make fun of him and slate him for all the damage he's caused, arguably he is just as much a victim of his surroundings, upbringing and society's sometimes backwards views on homosexuality in the south which in turn led him to hate himself so much that he created this monstrosity that has harmed so many others. On the other hand, he has inflicted so much damage and caused so much harm to so many people that it's going to take a lot to make it right and arguably never can be made right. The many victims of his 'therapy' will be damaged for the rest of their lives mentally as a result of his inhumane practices and that is inexcusable and these victims have every right to go after him. Essentially he's made his grave, and he now has to lie in it. Personally I would like to see him charged with something and to be behind bars for the rest of his life, however, I am not very educated in the legalities surrounding this practice in the US. If he can't be imprisoned, fined or anything akin to this, he needs to step up and at least try to destroy this horrendous practice that he's helped to create. EDIT: @SKANK you have exposed me as a skim-reader thank you for your response though, and from what you've said I whole-heartedly agree and believe that it should be recognised that not everyone is privileged enough to grow up in a time or environment where homosexuality/equal rights is accepted and taught. I think I made a statement based too quickly off the topic title...

Because there are actual studies that show that the majority of homophobes are secretly repressing homosexual desires. If anything, I would believe that if everyone percieved homophobic behavior to be rooted in homosexuality, then more people would stop themselves acting as homophobes out of fear of being labeled as gay. Where are these studies

DeleteMyAccount 11,881
The amount of harm and damage he has placed on this country and the world should be punishable by law in my opinion. Great, he's out. Have a cookie... Now do something about it. It's as sick as the world of the Handmaid's Tale. Creating lies, communities, and a world that literally kills people in the process. He didn't create or invent conversion therapy. As a young man he was a victim of conversion therapy himself. He thought it helped him, so he founded an organization to help other people. He was misguided, and his actions lead to a tremendous amount of damage, but we have to recognize where he was coming from. Put yourself in the shoes of the little boy in the Southern United States, coming of age during the AIDS crisis, in a religious community, bullied by your classmates, and scared for your soul. A lot of members of this site (perhaps not you specifically) have grown up with the privilege of not being terrified of your own sexuality. While that that privilege represents a positive shift in our culture, it also brings about a huge lack of empathy. Queer people from past generations deserve some slack. They didn't have the internet to reach out to their peers, they didn't have Will and Grace on TV. They were alone. Their exposure to homosexuality was entirely negative. We have to remember that, and be compassionate.
