Minimal :ladyhaha:

There's  nothing controversial about the song, or the article of clothing.

If someone has an issue with people wearing burqas, that's their own negative bias being projected out.

The outro alone sh*ts over the final version

6 years on and I still don't understand why the barnacle there was attachment to burqas since she literally only wore 3 and 1 was just a huge silk scarf, and the other wasn't even a burqa, it was a niqab. Sooooo

It would be massive. Her career would be pretty much over right away

It would be so divisive but she has never shied away from that, but imagine the MV!

But hurting religious sentiments and cultural appropriation isn't Gaga's forte so....

That was never the issue though. The argument was that Gaga was using the imagery of a burqa in spite of not being forced to wear one under religious ideals... or having any reason to reference a burqa aside from intentional provocation.

Because the vocals are simply better. The speaking for the verses on the final version don't do justice to the lyrics like the growling on the demo

I think it would have been very controversial and career ruining. Not just from the SJWs but also the media and Muslims.

Not to mention that she has a song on ARTPOP called Swine and Muslims do not eat pork. The song is also created by Israeli producers and we all know the messy history between Israelis and Arabs. Muslims would accuse her of creating controversy for the sake of it.

I am really glad she did not release Aura as Burqa.

Pretty big. Hell, it still sparked some minor controversy in 2013. And rightfully so.

It's a cool song, and a gorgeous and pretty clever metaphor. That said, I personally don't think it's Gaga's place as a white, Catholic, American to utilize this metaphor the way that she did.

I know others may feel differently. I have family who are followers of Islam, and I know friends who are also followers of Islam that thought the song's writing wasn't spectacularly offensive- hell, they even thought it was cool. But the biggest point we all generally agreed is that it might not have been within her scope to craft a metaphor around the burqa/niqab.

Does she have a right to? Sure. But the optics around it, especially here in the states, is a little insensitive.

I know it's an empowering metaphor, especially with lyrics about being a "woman of choice". I just think it was smart she went for a more ambiguous route regarding masks and identity.

Definitely. The angrier vocals on the demo version were much better. The final vocals felt... lazy?

If we never got the demo, I'm pretty sure my opinion on the final would be way different.
