Who cares about #1's... You and I and Edge of Glory performed surprisingly well and are multi-platinum singles

Everyone says it’s because of overexposure but it isn’t. BTW was a bad choice cause she made very catchy party songs in TF/TFM. But in BTW there wasn’t any. And people want to hear catchy dance songs not songs about being who you are or dark songs. And the production of album was very messy and loud.

But Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know, Foster the People’s Pumped Up Kicks, and Adele’s Someone Like You charted #1, #3, and #1 respectively in the same year

None of the singles except maybe TEOG were radio friendly tbh. BTW was only successful because it had major hype as the first single from the album, Judas under-performed because of controversy and being a reductive Bad Romance clone, You and I barely went Top 10 after an awful VMA performance, and MTN was a flop waiting to happen.

P.S. I'm only talking about US chart stats 'cause I don't care about the rest of the world. #SorryNotSorry

As a non-fan at the time, everyone was exhausted!  You and I was the only great single after the lead and she decided, rather nonsensically, to hinder its success in various ways (who really cares?). You must remember this was the summer of Rolling in the Deep and Someone like You, on Earth 2 You & I is a signature song like ShallowThat being said, I don't blame her for doing it her way and I highly doubt she has any regrets about the era, except working herself to the point of injury. It doesn't really matter Judas went #10 (a memorable if messy song)  or TEOG  #3 (totally unmemorable, eh song).

And y'all can keep giving me "Sad" ratings all you want, it doesn't change the tea that I spilled. :tea: BTW just wasn't a good album in terms of singles.

That performance was iconic

I think people were just over her. Its not necessarily a reflection of the quality of the music, but just a natural thing in the industry. Most iconic artists have a period of time or an album cycle where they underperform (by their own standards...BTW was still a successful album).

Start with 2+ years of constant media exposure + radio play and add in a controversial religious second single released around Easter on a Friday in 2011 and there you’ve got your answer :ladyhaha:

On a serious note, the BTW era was the first serious sign of an issue with both management (overworking, money-grabbing) and her waning public perception. It’s still one of the biggest eras of this decade tho :firega:

BTW was a bad album and gp and critics knows it. Only the little babies here dont accept it. The production was so lazy and over the place. Songs were boring and half of them were fillers

Because the overexposure happened with Born This Way the single, by the time the next singles came out people were already sick of Gaga. She was literally everywhere even before the album was released.

And honestly, Born This Way was not that well received. It was successful because of the enormous hype, but when that faded people were not into it. And the next singles had a fairly similar heavy sound, so they were not that successful.

Also, 2011 was the year Adele exploded, which was very much the "anti-Gaga" and what people were looking for.

Nailed it. It’s basically all our fave era so who cares.

Y’all said it’s mainly because of overexposure when Katy who is someone in a similar situation and is being over exposure as her back in 2011 managed to snatch a couple of #1 for her Teenage Dream era run. So I don’t think over exposure is the problem.
