ARTPOP: What different third single choice could have saved the era?

The era was doomed when no video was released for DWUW/R.kelly mess. There was a 5 month blackout period following that and everyone had moved one

1st single: Applause (August release)

2nd single: Do What U Want (October release)

3rd single: Sexxx Dreams (January release)

4th single: Gypsy (April release as the last single)

The problem with the release of GUY was the time it came out. Putting out a music video months after the messy album release was a bad idea. 

I do not think any it could have been saved at that point.

ARTPOP had too many problems. A different third single wouldn’t have done much. Gypsy was the safer and better choice but because the word has an offensive meaning behind for most of the world and now in the US it would have been a disaster for her. The album had potential; but the execution failed because of all the drama behind the scenes. Applause and DWUW lost their momentum by the end of 2013 and people moved on.

Any song would flop. The safest but also bold choice could've been "MANiCURE" with a kick-ass MV but I still think that would have peaked only at 44 on the BBH100

"Jewels N' Drugs" could've been interesting also if released as the 3rd single. At least it would have gained a bit of attention because Gaga is going Trap/Urban.

G.U.Y. was the perfect song. It had  nothing to do with the choice, it had everything to do with the promo and lack of interest. Which is why Gaga made that video for us, and even gave 2 fan favorites in the video (MANiCURE/Venus)

this, no song would have done good since no one cared about the era anymore and it had been to long with nothing happening.

But if they actually had made DWUW a proper hit with a video (not the one they did ofc) and released a 3rd single very early 2019, i would think Manicure would been best as the 3rd single and then Gypsy ending the era as 4th.

Applause was a good first single, celebrated her as a performer and a return to music. 

Do What U Want should have remained a promo single with a video shot without R.Kelly. In my opinion, the video should have been reshot. 

Venus should have remained the second single with a dark, high-budget space/futuristic video. 

Sexxx Dreams (feat. Rihanna) could have been a smash of a third single with Rihanna attached. Both strong fanbases, and it's a sexy song. 

Gypsy could have been the fourth & final single with a farewell to the era with a video with footage/behind the scenes footage from artRave.

MANiCURE would have been my choice b/c I think that song got robbed BUT

The most commercial sound at the time probably would have been

Sexxx Dreams. If I recall correctly, this third single slot would have happened right around the time when the 70s/80s disco/funk sound with really groovy basslines was popular  (Unfff, I will never get over how sickening the instrumental to this song is)

My opinion on the era:

1. Applause - More televised live performances in September.

2. Gypsy - It would have perfectly fit the radio sound in late 2013-early 2014.

3. DWUW - Either solo or remix as a single.

4. MANiCURE - I think that it would have had a great Spring/Summer sound.

5. G.U.Y. - A nice way to end the era.

remember when she said in an interview that the continuation to telephone would be "coming out soon" she obviously meant AURA and i'm still salty about the fact it never happened!
