Is Sarah really as bad as people say she is, and if so, why?

I have the same issue. The girl can CLEARLY build fantastic looks if we are talking at a technical level, but sometimes she doesnt; and I dont know if its because her design skills are poor, or Gaga´s design skills are poor. Most of the time the problem isnt the make up on its own, but the way it is put together.

This, so much. Especially the point about it not always being her fault. I also feel like most of her misses are happening in uncontrolled settings, where she doesn’t know what the full circumstances will be, lighting and all. Things can look amazing on a red carpet, but totally ****ed up in a MV, amazing at daylight, awful at night.  But: I still refuse to believe she did the HAUS BEAUTY stuff.. because the techniques are off, it doesn’t look like Sarah’s work at all; and Editorial Stuff is the stuff she shines at. And so does Gaga. It doesn’t add up. That’s just awful especially considering the fact that there are makeup products to be sold.

I start believing that Gaga wanted to look that way

Masculine for that tribute

I think she does exactly what Gaga wants. Gaga has never been concerned about whether she looked pretty or not. She wants to convey a message with anything she does and that is how she chooses her looks. The Oscar look ( I personally liked it) was 100% chosen to be like that. It was not some mistake by Sarah. If she wanted to look like a Kardashian 24/7 she would, thank goodness she doesn't and her and Sarah try new things. Even IF they aren't all our favorites.

Can i see some more examples of what people don't like about her? I think she is excellent and its clear that the Sinatra tribute was intentionally supposed to look like that

Sarah is good, she did some great C2C looks, JWT makeup was gorgeous, and the Countess makeup was possibly Gaga's best ever. She just hasn't had the chance to show off much in the past few years.

People say this a lot, but what new things do they try? To be clear, I'm not criticising Sarah here, but it seems like for the past 3 years Gaga's just been going for either a 'natural' look or just really basic glam like 99% of the time - nothing that is any more interesting than the 'Kardashian' look.

I guess when I say try new things I mean it’s always different and I don’t see it as playing it safe. The ASIB promotional era is a perfect example. Each makeup look was different but stayed within the context of what they were trying to deliver.

And I agree the Countess was to die for :v:

The hair, the injections, the expression, the reference... the makeup is not the only or the main problem here.

But I totally agree with the consensus of Sarah being hit or miss. Depending on various factors. Time, lighting, reference, can she use her expertise, does the setting or the look fall in her expertise... (I think editorial makeup is where she said she shines at.) Also the surroundings can totally change the way you work..

Her huge misses (for me) are the peak of Epidome (example: the Frank Sinatra tribute) and  the Haus Beauty Promo leaks. Which both probably aren’t hers to put blame on. Also some smaller stuff like some the backstage shoots Gaga did at the JWT. But when she came through she hit it hard, like the Grammys usually, the MET this year was MAJOR, unsure if she can top this, the Sound of Music tribute, a lot of the magazine work she did with Gaga, the tour makeup and of course the Countess. Also her work around the Million Reasons era was gorgeous, and so is her award show/performance stuff. And hate me, but at the Oscars she did an amazing job and she did what Gaga envisioned.

I think that last point is the big part. Her job is to please her client/boss, Gaga. If Gaga likes it then it’s a job well done; Gaga wouldn’t go out if she didn’t like her look.

I think in comparison to Tara and Sharon, Sarah is definitely her best makeup artist to date. She's also the most professional one she's had, like skill-wise, she's an ambassador for Marc Jacobs beauty for crying out loud:ladyhaha: (hence why she uses a lot of MJ makeup on Gaga)

She’s so bad she keeps winning awards and recognition from her peers.

People seem to forget that Gaga isn’t always about conventional beauty looks.

i think the misconception, especially with the Sinatra tribute, is that good makeup technique equates to beauty, but makeup, especially in Gaga's case , is used to transform her into something, something that I believe Sarah does very well! Also, the Oscars's minimalist look I think was Sarah's/Gaga's way to hold a timeless, classic look, rather than a result of poor/lazy technique
