RahrahWitch 6,956
I'm not familiar with her I was hoping for Zendaya after the Chloe Graze Moretz dropped out but I hope she does well. I don't really mind them changing the race of a character since I believe the original little mermaid is Danish but I don't think she looks all that much like Ariel. If they're Changing so much like the Seagull being voiced by a woman, Aquafina (who I think is perfect for it) and not sticking to the Character designs from the animation why did they consider Melissa McCarthy for Ursula? Gaga would be perfect.
Ashley 8,598
It’s not like the Little Mermaid is a historical biography or something, they can make the characters look however they want. What matters more is the story and acting imo.

gypsy101 5,428
only read the first two pages but wow already lots of racism in this thread with outrage about a fictional mermaid being played by a black woman. she was an animated character. this is an adaptation. she does not need to be a redhead and to imply she does is preposterous. Passing on Lion King as well. Idk about this one either. Edit : lol I'm pleasantly surprised to see GGD's block feature is in full working order based on some of the users I see you guys replying to. That's so weird, I disliked all the Disney live action remakes besides Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. I'l watch The Lion King, but imo, it doesn't look promising based on the trailer. I’ll speak for myself which is what we all should only be doing. Screaming RACISM at people that aren’t even racist is the easiest most ignorant route- especially when you don’t know ANYONE on the other side of your keyboard. I was pissed when Scarjo was incorrectly cast as an Asian. Hated that Hermoine was cast as Belle( because she can’t sing). Not happy at all about Melissa Mcartney because she doesn’t have that deep Ursula voice- which seemed more suited for a drag queen. I don’t like that Ariel was not cast as a Ginger. I might be partial, due to being a Ginger myself- and always loved her being THE GINGER princess. But they really could have found someone that reflected a Ginger mermaid. But whatever, I’ll get over. Just stop trying to hard to make money(casting untalented singers) or make a stir to be PC. Actually, stop with the remakes all together and get back to the art of original film making. The only remakes I have fully enjoyed are Cinderella and Maleficent. They picked THE RIGHT actresses for those films. Quit calling people racist just because your simple mind can’t comprehend other reasons of people not being happy with the casting of movies. pretty sure gingers have more like orange-colored hair. in the film Ariel had like a bright red. she’s not ginger. How is she back for many people? There is always a debate if she's black or white, last one was when Gaga was rumored to play her, Twitter was crazy about it https://www.okayplayer.com/culture/is-ursula-disney-a-black-woman.html She was already played by a black actress in Once Upon A Time. I could play the moderator, I can ban you, die sis.

All she has to be is a mermaid and this version is rumored to be moving locations anyway. Except that Andersen described the little mermaid as white girl and like it's him who wrote this story we should respect his wish and vision for the caracter ! ladylinners 485
I don’t like the casting of this movie. And that goes for ALL the casting. For me Ariel is the Disney princess I have always looked like, red haired, fair skinned and blue eyes. Not only was this the depiction in the Disney movie but the Disney Broadway musical. Im generally for remakes going in other directions as usually nothing can beat the original so remakes should not be a step-by-step retake. What irkes me about this Disney decision is that they had no problem with casting Beauty and the Beast as how Belle and Adam were portrayed in the animated version (btw I did not like the live action version and definitely not the casting of Emma Watson). But with Ariel they are deciding to go in a different direction. The only thing I like about this project so far is that Lin-Manuel Miranda is writing new songs. Will I watch the movie.. most likely. But so far I haven’t really liked any of the Disney live action movies. Maybe it will surprise me who knows. I actually love the 2014 remake of Annie, and I like it better than the original which most likely is an unpopular opinion.

Maybe this would make sense if Disney didn’t already have a film that highlights and celebrates actual African American culture. Is this not in some twisted way white washing? By just switching races of a popular princess... it’s not some historical drama. it’s a fairytale. about a mermaid.
