By now I think everyone on this cult site knows you're prejudice and somewhat racist. This applies to a lot of people in this thread who have an issue with ariel being casted by a WOC. Ariel can be played by any race because HER RACE ISNT CRUCIAL TO THE STORY. We wouldnt cast a white woman to play a live action version of Mulan, Tiana or Pocahontas because their races are crucial to their story and plot and play a major role in their character and the setting of the story. Many people of colour are able to naturally grow red hair. It's not reserved for white people. Ariel's whiteness is simply a product of the time her movie was made. Just say you're problematic and clearly have some weird lowkey white supremacist agenda.

For the first time ever young girls of colour can finally see themselves represented as princesses in film. What is your problem with that? For decades weve been represented as slaves, servants, peasants or villains in movies. LET US HAVE THIS ONE FOR ONCE IN OUR LIVES.

Honestly the amount of racist people on this site is ****ing crazy. Youd think a site dedicated to lady gaga would have actual educated TOLERANT people who would be accepting and understand the complexities of races and cultures but I guess not. It's about time we start calling them out on here too. Anyway I'm gonna sign out after this because I know you're just gonna go on the defensive and attempt to prove how you're not racist but your history on this site is enough evidence for everyone else to prove otherwise. Bye

:reductive:

Thank god not everyone is racially ignorant here.

I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.

So many things we can talk about with Ariel’s casting: her voice, her acting, but no! GGD wants to focus on something as trivial as the colour of her skin. :bradley:

At the end of the day Ariel is a mermaid - mermaids aren't real. Therefore mermaids are open to interpretation. Mulan is a story about a chinese warrior - asian people are real and are not open to racial interpretation in the story. European culture is multi-faceted.

Ariel's skin colour isn't integral to the storyline and doesn't effect the story in anyway because other disney films such as Mulan or Pocahontas where race was important to the storyline.

Disney is basing the Little Mermaid off their animated adaptation of the story which is presumed to of took place in the Caribbean and not off the original story.

But this mermaid is the same colour as other white Disney human princessess, so therefore, she must be white. She's always this colour and when she changes into a human, her skin colour doesn't change. Hardly open to interpretation. And while I'd naturally want a Chinese Mulan, how is her race integral to the story? It's set in China and everyone's Chinese but their race is never mentioned. The crucial part about Mulan is that she's female, nothing to do with her race. Just saying that maybe people only think her race is crucial because she's not white. Apparently, your race is always a crucial factor when you're not white, no matter what the reality might be. And what do you mean European culture is multi-faceted? Are you saying we're all the same?

I just also remembered that there was a cartoon series after the movie came out as I had one of them on video at the time. In one of the episodes, Ariel helps to rescue an explorer in a failing submarine and when he's back on land, we see him writing a book. Two kids run up to him and ask him if he's the famous Hans Christian Andersen. He says he is and tells them to gather round as he reads to them from the start of his new book and the episode ends with him starting off the story about a land he discovered under the sea. So, clearly, Disney was referencing the official story. Hans and the children looked and dressed like how Danish people did back then, as did the port look very Danish.

You have to be joking. Redheads aren't currently getting  profiled or killed based on the colour of their hair. #gingerlivesmatter

If you'd read the part in the article that explained about this very thing happening in the last 20 years, you'd maybe think differently. I'm very glad I've never been subject to this but being a redhead can be particularly bad at times, especially in the UK, where almost all of these attacks happened.

The level of racism and bigotry and ignorance coming from a Lady Gaga fan site is abhorrent and disgusting. You'd think fans of this woman would be more open-minded considering she appeals to a such a diverse audience

I guess this is what you get from a site that mostly has white people on it tho...

What's racist, bigoted and ignorant about simply wanting a character to be as you remembered them, just like any POC wants (and deserves) the same for their POC characters? Most people are saying that they wish Disney would show diversity by creating new POC princesses. You can't get more diverse than that. That's even more powerful than making remakes. It's very ironic that those actually fighting for diversity are actually getting accused of not believing in it.

You do know that Ariel's hair color isn't natural. As many movies where white play other races, we can't have one where a black person plays a white person. Cheers for blackwashing lmao.

How? It's never explained that her hair is magically that colour. Plenty of red hair depicted in cartoons is an unnatural shade of red for some reason, doesn't mean in that character's case, it wasn't meant to be natural. And most of us aren't supportive of whitewashing either. I don't know anyone here who actually does. We're at a point now where its looked upon as completely unacceptable so any studio who still does it is lambasted and the movie that results from it never does well. No one's actually saying they'd respond positively to a whitewash. I want minority roles to stay minority roles just as much as you do. I just think the origins of any story should be respected. That's not racism, that's consistency.

How? If she's the same shade of white as every other white Disney princess who are cited as white, then how can she be not white? If she wasn't white, why does her skin tone remain the same when she grows legs?

This is also extremism to don't want Ariel to be played to an actual red head. So...

For ppl who don't understand why is important for Ariel to be played by a white actress it's because all Disney Princesses (or at least the most known) are into the pop culture ! And you don't change pop culture because you want to. It's totally beyond the black or white washing ! They made it politic for no reason, when a movie like Disney shouldn't be !

Plus, if you are agree with that, you are not worth more than the ppl who decided to replace black caracter by white actor. This is so hypocrite.

I have an actual question though, why they suddenly change the color of Ariel's skin, but they stay silent when we ask for a gay prince or a lesbian princess ? It's not to change the society, it's for money, nothing esle.

And rumor as it, Beyonce was a big part of this decision. Some said that Haile (who is Beyonce's protege) to be Ariel was a part of her contract when Disney asked her to be Nala's voice. So like I said it's far from being a simple question of color change. They didn't plan to do that first.

No Ariel's skin color is not integral to the story but why stop there?  Make her shells red ...in fact maybe she just wears sea weed instead.  Maybe her hair is short and black and just natural?  Maybe Ursula should just have a mermaid tale instead of tentacles.  Maybe Flounder and Sebastian should be a clown fish and lobster........All things aren't really integral to the plot of the story at all.

I think the point some people are making is that just because you wish you could see the movie brought to life as you saw as a child doesn't make you a racist.  When you think of Ariel a certain picture comes to mind.  The original point of disney making live action movies was to bring to life these classic animated films......I understand how some people would like to see the animated film replicated as closely as possible but in a live action format.

"I don't see color, you SJWs shouldn't focus on skin color," say all the haters until a black woman gets cast in a role for a fish that was originally depicted as having light skin.
