Do you have Synesthesia?

Hi guys, this is my first topic here. :pole:

If you don't know what synesthesia is, according to Wikipedia:

"Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway"

There are different kinds of synesthesia, the most commons are:

Grapheme-color synesthesia: basically every digit or letter has a color. Days of the weeks and months as well.

Chromesthesia: assosiation of sounds/songs with colors.

Auditory-tactile: sounds can induce sensations in parts of the body.

Lexical-gustatory synesthesia: certain tastes are experienced when hearing words.

Many artists like Lady Gaga and Lorde have confirmed to have a form of synesthesia that help them making music.

In my experience, I have a strong grapheme color synesthesia and a lighter Chromesthesia.

I've had it since I was a child and never knew it was something special, I just tought everybody saw numbers and letters in different colors than I found out it was a rarity.

Also about the songs-colors thing I experience it the most when listening to ARTPOP where every song as a different color and the whole album is an explosion of colors.

What about you? Do you have a similar experience?

I'm so courios!!!

I don't have it a lot but SOMETIMES I get this clear image of a color in my mind when I listen to music. Like most recently with Carly Rae Jepsen's "Dedicated" for the whole album I get this really bright almost highlighter yellow in my mind.

I don't have it, but wish I did :laughga:

It sounds really romantic and creative. When I write music though, I *always* will imagine a visual to go along with it... which usually does manifest itself in colours and a specific aesthetic - but I don't think that is synesthesia. It's not literal bursts of colour that change in tune with a beat or word ect.

Not sure if it is Chromesthesia, but for me, keys have colors. The association is not strong, however.

Like for example, songs in B minor (Alejandro for example) remind me of navy blue.

I have chromesthesia, Lexical-gustatory synesthesia and slight Grapheme-colour synesthesia  :firega:

It's incredible for creativity and art. For example, when I listen to Bjork's Vulnicura I see very dark blue and green. When I listen to Madonna's Ray of Light I see blacks and whites.

I believe I have it, ever since I was little I associated numbers, letters, even songs with a certain color, here's some examples:

One: Blue, Two: Red, 3: Green, 4: Dark Blue, 5: Yellow

Venus by Lady Gaga: Turquoise, Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen: Orange, Lights by Ellie Goulding: Red (I can also imagine red lights :laughga:)

So yeah, I discovered recently that this was actually something certain people were born with and I thought just anyone can do this, but I guess not :laughga:

I have the chrome one and your colors are SO different from mine that it's bugging me lmao.

Can we all agree that ARTPOP is her most varied/"colorful" album though?????

I'm pretty sure I have these 2

Chromesthesia: assosiation of sounds/songs with colors.

Auditory-tactile: sounds can induce sensations in parts of the body.

I used to have no clue what Synesthesia really was. So it wasn't until I wrote an essay my senior year of high school about how music has such strong mentally visual links for me and so I see it as a much closer extension of graphic and fine arts than most people. The deeper I got into explaining what it's like the more interesting my teachers notes on my essay got - so eventually with the final grade she included a note and some further reading I could check out because apparently I had described  was exactly what synesthesia was.

Economy

When I was younger I used to associate certain words with Images that had nothing to do with the word

I don't have that anymore tho

For example when I was a kid (I lived in Portugal until I was 9) the Portuguese word for Saturday (Sabado) evoked the image of a burnt dust bunny with a fish net around it don't ask me why

And Sunday was red fire

There were other words that evoked other images unrelated to the word but I can't remember them all. I remember these 2 examples tho

I do, and I'm surprised actually not many people have it...?

Mine is like a heavy one, I associate literally everything with colors...days of the week, subjects, numbers, names, songs, words...

Depending on what it is I sort it in my brain not even just as a color but as a patter or a theme you know?
