There are a myriad of other effects, compression, eq, etc, that affect recorded voice quality that I think people are calling autotune when it's not. The purpose of those effects is to separate the voice from the mix. You can hear the autotune and it's VERY apparent on the bridge for Applause for example. Incase you don't know, which you probably do judging by your knowledge of effects, autotune doesn't have to sound like a robot to signify that it's there.
