giskardsb 12,565
this is actually the problem with the increasing polarization of the two main parties. The vast majority of people are more centrist. one of the reasons Trump was successful is because the far left is continuously making villains out of average white Americans and lumping them all into categories of racism and privilege that are nowhere near that well defined. On the other hand I tend to be centrist economically but I refuse to vote republican as long as the social far right has influence in that party. The vast majority of people want HUMANE but controlled immigration.

Which is exactly what left parties want. It's because of their adolescent-like incapability of informing people with facts rather than choosing emotion and ideological overtones that makes people not realize this. It's the same in my country. Few left politicians understand these days that it's by offering an antidote to the emotionally fuelled and fearmongering far right rhetoric by sticking to the facts and not making it about emotion and ideology that you become a favorable alternative to a huge amount of people. If you choose emotion and ideology, right-wingers call you on it (even though they don't represent facts either) and the public eats out of their hand. We seriously need a more intelligent center space in politics.
Woolfsmck 2,763
Fraudulent or denied asylum seekers get sent home... Border crashers who don't get caught right away = what? Waiting till their case gets reviewed are ? Once allowed asylum, then what. ? Are they entitled to a room at the Hilton for life or what. like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. Woolfsmck 2,763
Also, the far left is dragging the moderates down... The independent voters are largely middle class , so .. tax this , change that, cost cost cost . They aren't fooled by utopian politics or unaffordable proposals that are too good to be true. like a cat in a sil, I observe life, moving and still. Petie Estie 5,704
border crossing was not always a criminal offense. There is a civil offense system that can and used to take care of it. Morphine Prince 109,645
I think "losing the independent vote" is a dramatic statement. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. She lost in swing states in large part due to a poor campaign. This is where she needed to focus on and failed to do so appropriately. While Trump's campaign managed to win just enough people over. It is not a strange phenomenon that a Republican won after 8 years of a Democrat in power. Just as it won't be strange for a Republican president to be re-elected.
